Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Teng or Sealey?

I'm planning on treating myself to a toolkit sometime in the next few months, a big f-off proper kit. I've decided that, come hell or high water I'm going to get a cabinet type one with 'modular' drawers, i.e. there are pre moulded inserts in the drawer that means there is an assigned place for every single tool. I'm a stickler for organisation, after every job I clean and put back every tool. (I'm a hobby mechanic. not a professional, tools are just my porn, some of you will understand ;)).

I always wanted the 1001 piece one that Teng do, seems to be on a constant special offer for about 3k. Just looking it up there again tonight and I found that Sealey also do a modular cabinet thats on special offer for £1380 stg.

I know, I know, awful waste of money, probably won't use half the tools, etc. But I want it, again, some of you will understand. (Sitting in the garage til all hours of the morning looking at it is enough of a temptation for me).

Does anyone know if one is significantly better than the other, is it worth ssaving harder for the Teng one? Or does anyone know of alternatives? I do put my tools under a bit of pressure at times, I have plenty of broken spanners and sockets to prove it so quality would be important.

Sealey are great for garage equipment, engine cranes, stands etc but their hand tools are not great and don't last IMO.

Having said that if its just for home use then they may well do the trick but I've got tengtools that are still in everyday workshop use which are 11 years old.

Sealey are great for the specialised stuff you use occasionally.

Teng/Britool/Facom etc are a good general purpose hand tool.

Snap on are great for the stuff you use constantly and break (screwdrivers/ratchets etc) as they have a lifetime warranty.

    So does Teng..

Snap on is more about having the name on your tool box IMO.

I have both Teng and Sealey sockets, spanners etc.

    I find both are excellent.

The only advantage with Teng is that if I lose a socket I can buy a direct replacement at the local auto factors. I haven't seen Sealey stuff on sale individually.

IMO you won't go wrong with either brand. Remember the #1 rule: never ever loan part of your set to anyone!

P.S. You want porn? Here ya go :D

I bought a good bit of teng stuff from a crowd called tool shack in the UK over the years. Prices very good but not a great crowd to deal with. Worth checking their website anyway if you haven't already.

The last Motorfactors I was in said Sealey had a lifetime warranty too.

Spot on, Teng make great hand tools and sockets/ratchets

Sealy are good for the specialised stuff / hand tools not great in my opinion.

Snap on - crazy expensive - make the best tool boxes. A good secondhand Snap on box is better than most boxes of similar price IMHO.

Cant go wrong with the 1001 piece teng though. would love one myself:)

Hmm, yeah seems I'd be better off holding tough for the teng so. At least it should have all the tools I'll need bar the heavier stuff which I already have anyway. If it would prevent me from buying other bits and pieces just cos I want them it'd be worth it in the long run to pay the extra.

Thanks lads, advice much appreciated and taken on board.
