Quick question regarding what I can expect to get off a car worth 6k on a straight sale.

Am I too optimistic in expecting to pay only 5.5k?

    BTW it's a 04 Almera H/B.

Start lower: that's just an opening bid. I'd try lower, what are you HAPPY to pay ? Fr'instance, if you really think it's only worth 5500 to you, then to end up there, you should offer.........less !

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

start at 2.5k and see how you get on

If you walk into any dealer with an attitude like that you should be politely shown the door.

I would say to begin at the sticker price less 20% would be a good starting place. That's just on average, the car could already be very keenly priced or overpriced so maybe you could show us the ad.

I think you should get it for 5.5k. Depending on what mood the seller is in, maybe slightly lower, but can't see you getting it for 5k or less

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,777 ✭✭✭Neilw

I looked at a car in a main dealer that was listed at 5995, he dropped to 5k straight away when cash was mentioned, he then said if a deal could be done around 4k he would be happy enough.

Only if you want to be laughed at while being escorted off the premises. Garages might be a little desperate at the moment but they are not plain daft.

OP there are plenty of Almeras about so shop around. But to answer your specific question if they are asking €6k then start with a sensible offer of around €5k. Even a generous 10% discount drops the price by €600. I think €5500 in today's climate is realistic and achieveable.

Actually scrap that, looking here you would get a 05 Almera within your budget:

    Cheers for the help.

Yes I was considering starting the offer at 5k and not going above 5.5k Anything other than that and I'll just walk away. Thanks for the links bazz26 but I'm more interested in a h/b at the moment.

In my mind he wants to sell and I'm willing (provided the car is ok) to buy. I'm sure they would be willing to compromise if I suggest buying there and then.

The seller is being ridiculously optimistic looking for €6k for an '04 Almera tbh.

Question - what do dealers mean by "straight sale"? I've been seeing it more often in the last few weeks in ads.

If we assume a 5dr hatch and reasonable mileage, then 6000 euro isn't far off. If they are asking 6000 then 5500 doesn't sound bad. Cheapest one on Carzone (with less than 100k) is a 48k one at 5300 but it's very basic. Price range is 5950 up to 9950 ! At 6000 the price is good so I wouldn't expect to get too much off. If they were to ask you 7000 for the car, but take 1000 off to end up at 6000, would you be happier ? Or 8000 and take 2000 off ???

Saloon is not worth as much as 5dr hatch, so not a fair comparison. 3dr hatch can be a slow seller also. The 5dr is the best one.

I just checked the prices with one of the used car wholesalers in Dublin. Trade price for a 04 Almera 5dr isn't much below 5500.

start at 2.5k and see how you get on

This is a totally ridiculous suggestion. If the seller would be happy to take anything close to 2500 then all they would have to do is pick up the phone to the nearest independent used car sales lot and they would have a deal, without any servicing, preparation or warranty.

Now 2.5k is really stupid offer.

The fella i know, he has a garage, and selling cars. But he have nothing newer then 04. And his business is flying atm! People do buy now cheap cars.

Some of them came to him and said: mine car was reposessed, so i need some cheap car now. And theres loads of people like this.

Now dealers who have in stock 06-08 cars, they do have alot of trouble, but those who selling cars up to 7-8k eu are not in bad possition.

So dont expect to buy cars up to <04 year for pennys guys.

For anyone considering an Almera, I suggest you take a look at the videos and pictures on the Euro NCAP website:
    http://www.euroncap.com/tests/nissan_almera_2001/86.aspx
    "Front impact
The body structure was found to be unstable post-impact. This means it was difficult to predict how it might behave in more severe accidents."

[I am biased, and I don't mean to cause offence to anyone who has an Almera, but I wouldn't wish anyone to have a crash in one]

No, its not...OP 6k isn't a bad price to be honest. Go in and aim for 5k and see what happens. About 5400 would be very fair. But being honest, there are far better cars around for the money. Have a look at a focus/leon/civic for starters

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 500 ✭✭✭hawker

The car is for my wife and she is most interested in a focus or almera. I looked at the focus and I was wondering would the 1.4 be powerful enough if five of us (2+3) were in it?

If so, I 'll deffo look more closely at the focus as suggested above. I never thought of a leon or civic.

As I've said above I'm not going a cent above my budget of 5.5k so I'm willing to walk.

I was told that most dealers will accept 75% of the forecourt price of any car on a straight sale so I wouldnt be offering anymore than that.

My look at the 1.4 litre Focus when you can find a 1.6 litre. The Almera is 1.5 litre so there is almost nothing in the difference between running a 1.5 litre and 1.6 litre.

Focus is also a superior car to the Almera.

Also look at the Mazda 3:

I had a 1.4 Focus. Disaster of an engine. Find a 1.6 and it transforms the car. The 1.4 would feel sluggish even if you dropped it off a cliff with 4 elephants on board and a rhino in the boot.

You constantly have to rev it hard when you want to overtake etc. Was dire on petrol too

How can you make a generalisation like that? Statements like that really annoy me. You cannot make a judgement like that without knowing the real market value for the car. Take the 04 Almera being discussed. If the sticker price is 8000, we know the car is not worth that, so 25% off ie 6000 would be fair enough. But if the same car is sticker price 6000 and you want 25% off = 4500, not likely.

Makes more sense for me if the dealer asks marginally above what he needs to get. By advertising at a keen price he will generate more interest and get more calls, so better probability of getting a sale.

Look at the "real" price of the car, and offer something a little lower (not insultingly low). Forget about this 25% below talk.
