Recommend a car to buy

    Hi all,

    I'm looking to sell my 05 VW golf because it is just bleeding money and I'm just sick to death of paying out hundreds of euros to fix it every couple of months. So I was hoping someone could recommend a car that is reliable to buy and won't break down every couple of months like my current one is.

    I am hoping to buy a 08 in order to get the lower tax but hoping also to get something with an engine size of ideally 1.6 diesel. The car I have now is petrol and my commute to work just drains the tank costing me more money :p

    Any help is much appreciated ^_^

    What's your budget? Annual mileage?

    Maybe max would be 9000. Annual mileage would be a nice bit. I drive from clonmel to dungarvan 5 days a week. Then at least once a month I'd be driving from Clonmel to Gort in Co.Galway. Sorry I honestly don't have an estimate of annual mileage!

    Mileage on this is above average but it wouldn't bother me too much once it has a service history and was mostly motorway mileage. Motor tax is the same as most 1.6 diesels also with the bonus of having plenty of poke when you need it.

    There's a lot more mileage on my car compared to the one you have there :p What would you consider to be average?

    could I just point out that there wont be too much of a motor tax difference between a 1.6 diesel on CC or emissions (if at all in some cases). It was more BM and the like who only had the 2 and 3L diesels where there were "significant" % savings... Also if you are going for emissions, engine size is nearly irrelevant as its now Co2 that is measured, so no need to limit yourself to smaller CC engines... What is going wrong with the golf? buying something newer is unlikely to ever be a money saving exercise, unless it is something expensive to run like a luxobarge etc...
