Building a metasearch engine in PHP

I have to build a metasearch engine using PHP for college, can you recommend any books or resources that may help? (bearing in mind that I have little or no experience in php, and am quite weak at coding in general at the moment!). We don`t have to use PHP, but it`s a popular choice. Thanks :D
