    Minister predicts cheaper broadband

    THE Minister for Communications, the Marine and Natural Resources Dermot Ahern yesterday said his department had met its promises on the availability and competitiveness of broadband telecommunications.

    He also predicted further price cuts in broadband later this year following what he called "the dramatic drop in wholesale prices from both Esat BT and ESB, which are being passed onto the customer".

    He made his comments in Dundalk as he turned on the ESB Telecoms National Fibre Optic Network, which is 13,000 kilometres long and is wrapped around the existing electricity network through which the ESB transits power.

    The existing infrastructure has allowed the ESB to play a leading role in making broadband available around the country and ESB chairman Tadhg O'Donoghue yesterday said, "We hope that with the infrastructure now in place we can help bolster economic development right along the fibre route".

    The network was completed at a cost of €50m and links Dublin to Limerick through Cork, Waterford, Dundalk, Sligo and Galway back to Dublin with a spur line linking Letterkenny and Buncrana.

    Pricing on this is funny, and the governemnt spent how much more laying cable in the ground?

    As did esat by rail tracks didn't they?

    Since when is a figure of 8 around ireland that long?? 1300km I think.

    Esat's railway network doesn't serve every major population centre however a combination of EsatBT, ESBT and Aurora when complete will look a whole lot better.
