Can the public be prohibited from entering a count centre

Yesterday evening, I tried to get into Clare count centre, West County Hotel, Ennis, last night. At the door I was asked for a pass. The reason for passes was health and safety. The hall was about half-full. After an exchange I was told to go to the foyer where candidates were waiting for the count result to be announced…

Yesterday evening, I tried to get into Clare count centre, West County Hotel, Ennis, last night. At the door I was asked for a pass. The reason for passes was health and safety. The hall was about half-full. After an exchange I was told to go to the foyer where candidates were waiting for the count result to be announced and try for some there. Passes were apparently issued by returning officer to candidates, who in turn distributed to whoever.

The car-park was quite full and, admittedly, overcrowding may have been an issue. My gripe is nobody could give a straight answer as to who has authority over who enters and whether, technically, a returning officer, or other count official, has the authority to prohibit members of the public from entering a count centre.

The whole affair seemed petty and irrational.
