Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Your challenge - laptop purchase advice - PC World...

    Morning all - here's my query - really hope you can help.
    I want to upgrade my PC (Basic Dell) and get a laptop - maily to be portable within the house. I have the option to get a deal through work - which means I have to purchase through PC World - this is a given so can't change this. This means I have a budget of around €1200 - €1500.
    My intended use is (not in any order) - browsing internet (music, youtube), some downloading or live streaming, skype (family in UK/US), storage of photos and potentially video with maybe some video editing and watching DVD's. I'd like a good picture and relatively good sound. I'd also be using microsoft office as well. Not a gamer really.
    Regarding mobility - it doesn't need to be tiny as I think it will be 75% use within the house. Warranty is included in the work deal through PC world so not an issue.
    My brother is insisting I get a Macbook (he knows stuff) but I'm keen to ask some more measured people - i would like an integrated webcam for skype and I've found his and my Dad's macbooks to be good for this. Happy to pay a bit more if they really are much better/easier to use!
    I await your advice/scorn/help! Has to be PC world otherwise the deal is off!

    Now, before this turns into a Mac vs. PC debate, I will make one or two points.

    Generally speaking, for the same money, you will get a better specced PC. Generally speaking. Macs tend to be that bit more expensive.

    Macs are sleekier, sexier and, some people say, easier to use, but that all depends on what your level of experience is with computers.

    In terms of hardware, both run pretty much the same processors, memory, hard drives and all that. You can run Windows on Macs, but you have to pay extra for that. I know all Windows laptops come with wireless (WiFi), I am pretty sure it is the same with Macs.

    There seems to be more software available for Windows, but unless it is highly specialised, you should not have much trouble in finding comparable software for the Mac.

    So, ultimately, I would say go in an use a Mac, see what you think. Remember you will get more bang for your buck with a PC, but given your relatively modest requirements, I don't think that is really an issue.

    Thanks for the advice Tom - this is where I'm leaning at the moment - my brother is an Apple Freeeeeeek and converted my Mum and Dad to them as well - I'm going to borrow my Dad's macbook for a week or so and see how I get on - I cant get the windows piece for free so that's not an issue
