Gaining Experience

    Hello all,

I have just completed a degree course in Business Computing in DIT Aungier Street. I have applied for a lot of positions in Software Quality/Testing, Java and Front End Development roles with little response as of yet.

I am beginning to wonder if the lack of relevant experience on my CV is a factor. My placement as part of college was not in a specialised software company but rather in the IT department in a company. With that in mind, I was wondering does anybody know how I could go about gaining experience in software development environment/workplace? Are internships available and if so how do I go about looking for them? Google can point me in the right direction I know but I am beginning to think that most of these websites are merely harvesting CVs. There are a lot of graduate positions available but competition is high for these, and I don't want to be resting on my laurels for long in case I cannot find something. If people are not comfortable responding, drop me a PM. Thanks for your help.

Have you tried applying for Graduate Programs at the likes of IBM, Ericsson and other Large organisations. An idea would be to develop your own projects and upload to Github.

I wouldn't consider this as much of an issue as long as you were still doing substantial software dev/testing relevant to your degree.

That shouldn't matter, what's important is what you were actually doing on the placement. Some dev/qa?

Are you selling yourself well on your CV?

There are plenty of startups in Ireland crying out for IT people. You should try going along to one of the events on meetup and network with the entrepreneurs there.
