Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    But I'm a fan of the T2s - especially the old RWDs. Is that yoke ex military - those green hub caps tell all sorts of stories.

    Go for it - but what about getting one with the 'extendable' roof?

    Naaahh ...done the camper bit (see sig) for 15 years.

    This would be the daily runaround.
    And yes, it's ex German army, well conserved, low mileage and it's 4WD.

    It ain't cheap, though :o

    I drove the Synchro a while back - one of the last T2s. I have to say, I love those vans - great yokes. Whats the asking price..............?

    Those ex army thingies go for ~6k ...about 3.5k for the non 4WD

    and prices are climbing fast

    At least you can probably rest assured that an ex army Type 2 would be well serviced and looked after throughout it's life. So you're probably going to get a minter.

    Keep the Jimmy for the mo, wait 2 years and import a VRT free, 30-year old G-class? Pay nearly no tax and insure it as a classic

    No idea at all. Back in the day when I was driven around in them, there was (nearly) free slave labour in my organisation. The maintenance seemed to be nothing compared to the G's predecessor in my organisation, the LandRover. Now that yoke needed about 10 hours of maintenance for every hour it was driven :eek:

    They're nowhere near as durable as we are led to belive. Early examples have suffered pretty badly.
    Corrosion is rampant and body parts are expensive, so are the drive bits.
    Most older examples by now have seen some pretty hardcore offroad action by their n-th owner ..usually on a low maintenance budget.

    And those early engines really were puney and slow (and that's coming from a slow-coach like me :D ) and had their nuts well revved off by now.

    Pristine examples on the other hand fetch totally off the wall prices.

    It's worse actually :D

    The thing is ...I do 98% of my driving on small country lanes, another 50% of which are restricted to 60 km/h.

    I don't do motorways but once a year ...same goes for long distances.

    Been looking at a nice Saab recently and dicided that it would be a waste of money (and a massive threat to my licence :D ) ...where I'm driving I have no use for power and speed.

    You're doing just fine. Stay your prudent and modest self. You don't seem to have much to gain by "upgrading" to any of the cars mentioned in this thread. Might be best to forget about the Saab :)

    Someone in my locality owns a syncro just like that, also a daily driver. The track to his house is quite rough as well.
    www.club80-90.co.uk (I think) has a syncro board if you're interested.

    They're nice enough alright and like you said.... appreciating in value like mad over the last couple of years, just like the campers...

    It looks like a great motor.

    I'd say the German roads have been kind to it and with all those windows, the visibility would be great. The high driving position should also take away any disadvantages of being LHD.

    Wise not to go for the Saab, I bought a 9-5 2.0turbo auto estate recently in the UK for small money. Fantastic car, but that 'S' button (sport mode) is too tempting to hit when you want to get round the car in front at Mach2!

    I fear for the points that may get awarded to me one day.

    My only saving grace is that it's the missus' car, and I stick to my TDI.
    That old VW van looks sweet - I say go for it!
