Dublin Airport gets planning permission for the second terminal.
A second terminal at Dublin Airport has been given the go-ahead by planners at Fingal County Council.
The new terminal will cater for 15 million passengers and will cost €395m.

Dublin Airport Authority says the new terminal will be operational in three years.

28 individuals and companies had objected to the proposal during the planning process, including Ryanair who wanted the terminal to be built privately.

Fingal County Council has attached 43 conditions to the planning permission. The decision however allows for the demolition of Corballis House.

Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) chief executive Declan Collier welcomed the decision.

'We are delighted that our plans to transform Dublin Airport have cleared the first hurdle in the planning process,' he said. 'We will now study the decision in detail before making any further comment on the specifics of the planning permission that has been received.'

The DAA had sought permission to construct a new 75,000 sq metre passenger terminal, T2, close to the roundabout on the existing approach road to Terminal One. Permission was also sought for a new 24,000 sq meter pier building, Pier E, that will deliver up to 20 new aircraft boarding stands.

Construction of T2 is due to begin the second quarter of next year, subject to planning, and the new terminal will open in the autumn of 2009.

'The planning process in Ireland is a democratic one and stakeholders are entitled to their views on infrastructure development. But we hope that if there are appeals to this decision, the appeal process moves ahead as swiftly as possible in the interests of all the users of Dublin Airport,' Mr Collier added.
