Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Lent is for weak-willed people who need a specific date to try giving up stuff and fail miserably, and will usually pick the same stuff they made New Year's resolutions about

I gave up giving things up for Lent years ago.

Partly because I'm not religious, but partly because it's usually counter-productive. If you give something up completely for a few weeks, you're more likely to overdo it after (or on Patrick's Day if you allow yourself to take that day off).
It's like going on a crash diet, then breaking and binging.

If you're eating too much unhealthy food or drinking too much, you don't need to give them up completely (unless you think you're an alcoholic).
Just cut down on them for the whole year, but still allow yourself to enjoy them.

Also, if you're cutting something that's bad for you out of your life, what good will it do you if you do it for 40 days out of 365/366?
It would seem much more sensible to me to have a forty-day period of complete indulgence, with moderation the rest of the time.

I'm cherry-picking the good parts of lent, I'll eat loads of pancakes tomorrow and I'll have some easter eggs whenever you're supposed to and then I'll wait till next year to do it again

My housemate is using Lent as a reason to diet so she's giving up carbohydrates.

If the warnings on the packets didn't make me quit, a story about some chap in a desert isn't going to do much. I'm giving up nothing.
