Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Children on Landing ! WTF !

Before I state my case, let me inform you that I'm not much of a believer in ghosts n spirits, I have the 'religion' where "I believe when I see" moto.

But whats going on at my home these past few months has me a bit spooked. At first it was only my wife that had the experiences, and I really just laughed her off, saying she was hearing things !
But thats the problem , she was hearing things out on the landing of our two storey house. And it wasnt much of a deal to me until I started to hear them too.

What we hear is the sound of a child running along the landing. Since we have three kids, two of them mobile enough to run along the landing, we obviously taught it was one of them out of the bed using the bathroom.
But on numerous occassions, we would jump out of the bed as soon as we hear the sounds, run out onto the landing, but there would be no-one there. We'd check the kids, they would be out for the count.

Like I said, I have no reason to fabricate this story, these are simple facts. I have started to hear the same sounds, We would be wide awake when hearing them, not been woken up by them before someone asks.

Last week we had a baby over for the nite, during the nite my wife was sitting up giving the baby a nite feed, and she heard the same sounds again, a child running along the landing, she went to check it out, not a sign of any of the kids out of their beds.

Any thoughts from the specialist in here ?
Id be glad to hear them.

thats weird alright. is there a house next door that the sound may be coming from?

Set up a video camera on the landing and see if you can capture the sound you are hearing (while the video will show there's no-one there making it)

What sort of house is it? detached, semi etc. Most modern houses have notoriously thin walls, so it's possible you may be hearing the neighbours kids running up and down their landing, bear in mind if it's nighttime as it's quieter you'll notice more distant noises.

How can you tell it's specifically children?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,240 ✭✭✭alibabba

Im out in the countryside, detached 2 storey house, nearest house is over a mile away. These sounds are SO distinct, believe me, when you hear them, you are 1000% convinced there is someone on the landing. There is carpet on the landing, we have heard our kids coming out to us the odd time, the sound they make shuffling along the landing is EXACTLY the same sounds as what we hear when there is no-one there.

i would suggest setting up a camera and record the sounds and video the environment.

Id also suggest putting some white powder, shake n vac, flour etc (anything that you can hoover afterward). It will indicate footprints.

have you checked the attic or under the floorboards for signs of mice or rats?

Uhh you should defianlty set up the camera would be very interested to know if you find anything....be quite handy too if you put a lot of shake a vac down and they were running around on it saves you the hassle of spreading it out on the carpet

TBH i dont feel too comfortable taping an empty landing for a whole nite and watching it back again. If for some remote reason I see something anyway out of the ordinary, it might give me the 'time to pack the bags' feeling ?!?!?!?

The shake n vac sounds ok, but if one of the kids runs over it during a nite and I dont hear them, this will only add fuel to the fire !
I suppose I cud check their feet and see if there is shake n vac on them.

I dunno, tis hard to know. But i dont think I'll go too far down the ghostbusting route or have any spiritual rituals just yet.

if you dont try to capture the audio then you cant really start trying to locate the source of the sound - which lets be honest, is what you want to find out.

    True.

I really think you should set up a camera... at least you might find the source of it and you can rest easy.. well hopefully

I think you need to set up something to catch the sound mate because this could be a great chance for you catch something on video/sound and post it on here and see if we have anything paranormal on our hands here.

Let the kids have a sleep over in a family members house.

Then if you hear kids footsteps in the night ...........

The old John Denver song comes to mind.

    Leaving on a jet plane.

While I totally understand your hesitancy at the idea of taping what sounds like a haunted hallway for a night and watching it back, unless you do this you'll just have to ignore the footsteps and pretend they don't exist. Better to realise that there's (almost surely) a perfectly rational reason for this than to sit there petrified everytime you hear the footsteps and do nothing about it.

    you'd be surprised!

often times people hear sounds, actual sounds, and supplement the rest with their imagination!

dont wuss out on us now ;).. Lets get to the bottom off this.

Put the kids to bed, make sure they are out forthe count.

    Powder the floors
Position a camera and start recording when u go to bed,
Notice time you go to bed, if you hear anything, find out how long before you slept and fast forward the duration on the video camera. So you dont have to go checking for hours. Best of luck, be interesting if it happens again if u do this.

Does it only happen at night? any other strange things happen that your not telling us/.? or is it just the sounds on landing, how many kids do u have, how old,are they likely to be up that late at night running around?

I've heard of similar noises being heard in different locations, turned out to be pigeons or rats in the walls and attic.

Can you rule out anything i the attic/walls?

i dunno how a rat can get into walls or a pigeon, or why they would be in an attic, rats live under ground , they only rubbage around where there is a food source,

rats can get into any space they are extremely adaptive, they can chew through pretty much anything you throw at them as well

Yes but only to places they know they can get food. I don't think this guy lives in a hut.

Like i said, get a camera and sound equipment and try to get to the bottom of it.

    rats will eat anything though

its probably not even them but i dont see that it would hurt to check if there is something living up there

I caught a very large rat in a rat trap in my attic a number of years ago, turned out he was climbing up through the cavity in the wall.

the sound of the rat was very freaky as we only heard it at night, and it sounded like a small child running.

I had the same problem in my house..we had a huge rat( I saw it peep at me through an air vent).anyway before I knew we had rats I would have sworn there was a little kid running around my attic it was really creepy! Its worth getting pest control..but set up the camera aswell!

perhaps he has been man-napped by the kids

    Update ...

still pondering (on whether to get camera out or a rat trap)
To answer your questions in one post, kids are 6 and 5, but any time I have heard the sounds I''d jump out of the bed and run to landing, the kids would be fast alseep, there would be no chance they would have gotten into bed some of the times, so I can safely say that it aint the kids making the sounds.

I have scoured the attic for rat droppings in the meantime, (you have me more paranoid about the rat now rather than a spirit) !
Cant find anything that looks like a rat dropping.
I have even placed a pile of storm up in the attic in a container and this hasnt been touched for days.

I think everyone so far has given you very good advice, It will be of course totally up to you if you want to go on that advice, But for peace of mind as other have said i would let a camera run, with talc on the carpet for proof of someone running.
I do hope what ever you decide to do that you can get some peace of mind from everyones support .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,390 ✭✭✭fintonie

a camera or talc will not pick up anything if we are talking about an entity here,

    there not in solid form

    Was wondering about that myself.

    Surely ghosts don't leave footprints.

im not going to bother with powder on the floor

the best way to see if anything is happening is looking for temperature fluctuations,

or if you check for energy surges this will give you a better idea if something out of the ordinary is happening.
