what are the chances of getting on campus accommodation if you didn't get 500 points ?

Is Larkfield really as bad as people make it out to be? I'm hearing serious mixed reviews and I'd love to know the truth. I'm gonna be sharing with another lad from my school so at least I'll know my roommate, but what's it like for meeting others, parties, general living quality etc? Thanks :D

Great atmosphere for meeting first years and great having the common room and obviously being on campus and close to everything. On the down side you have to share a toilet, rooms are small, kitchen is tiny, strict enough getting people back at night. Obviously there's a risk you could have a bad room mate too but you seem to be ok on that one.

Long story short, good for socialising, bad for comfort.

On the contrary, I found Larkfield to be very cosy.

I'd highly recommend it. One of the best years of my life when I lived there.

I tend to disagree I'm afraid, I stayed in Larkfield for my first year and it definitely contributed towards my bad experience in DCU. It's very basic and lacks comfort, but you can get over that, the main problem is actually the lack of living/socializing space. Yes there are common rooms, but they are only really used for predrinks and leave much to the imagination!! It's very easy to feel isolated there, as there's it's not really pleasant in the winter, you can feel very alone. It is quite handy in terms of location, it is on-campus so you are a stones throw from everything, which makes it handy for rolling out of bed 5 minutes before lectures!! Overall it's grand for first year once you're prepared for a very basic bedsit and are also willing to put yourself out there to make friends, it's not as easy as accommodation with 5/6 people and a social area. It's fine for first year, just don't be too optimistic and that way you won't be let down :) best of luck!

When will houses in the DCU area start going up for lets for next year? And where will good lists be available? Like will DCU itself have any lists of available lets?

Best time to start looking is from mid-July onwards. Don't worry though about grabbing something quick though, there'll still be plenty of houses available in August. I prefer getting a house before the Leaving Cert rush but if you're in 6th year now, obviously wait till you get your results and then start looking straight away.

Best website to look on is daft.ie - just search for rooms in the surrounding areas and keep a track of it as new properties are put up all the time.

I live in kerry and will almost definitely be going to dcu next year. I have applied for on campus accommodation in larkfield just to keep things simple for first year. If I don't get on campus, what are my other options?

Shanowen square's and halls' websites both say they are fully booked and I'm not too keen on gateway as it's much further away.

You could rent a bedroom in a house nearby. Or if you know other folk going to, then get a house between you?

I would apply for Shanowen Square anyway because people WILL cancel last minute. Students who drop out after failing repeats in August or for whatever reason, so you should definitely give them a call to get on the waiting list if you don't get a place in Larkfield.

From my own experience I would go for Shanowen over Larkfield anyday. I enjoyed living in Shanowen and it is much more comfortable than Larkfield.

When do you find out if you got campus or not? Is it like fairly soon after the cao offers are out?

Where is the best accommodation for a postgrad student starting DCU ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11 HB1024

Yes, I'd also be grateful if someone could offer advice specifically for Postgrad accommodation in 2013/14. I'm starting there then.

I rented on-campus accommodation when I was an undergrad (different college) and it was a nightmare, so I'd hopefully be looking off-campus.

    Cheers,

    Hb.

When the offers came out last year... Which was a Monday I think?? People who got campus knew on Tuesday, and people who were not successful found out on Wednesday :)

    A hoy-hoy.

I'll be starting a masters in HR in September and I'm wondering if anyone is looking for a roommate?
I pay rent on time and clean up after myself like a big boy. I've no problem with socializing but the masters might clip a good chunk of my happy time :( If you're interested in messaging me or figuring out what kind of a character I am in general feel free to hop onto facebook, all the information should be open to the public. https://www.facebook.com/fionn.brickley
Having studied in Maynooth for four years I'm kind of clueless about what areas are good/bad or what landlords should be avoided (green as summer). If anyone could even give me advice on where to look for I'd be most grateful.

Enjoy this suspiciously warm summer. :)

ps: I see some postgrads here (Nialler90 and HB1024). Have you two sorted accommodation yet?

Hey! I am a student in DCU studying Computer App's going into second year. I stayed in Larkfield for my first year and thought I'd share my experience with the place.

I got Larkfield and moved up there a few months before I was 18. I couldn't experience Freshers week as well as the rest. I had the pleasure of moving in with a rather interesting roommate. He described to me the worst ways for someone to die initially when we moved in and went to go look at the area, which was very near the dodge part of Ballymun. I went to the Larkfield Rave as the most socially awkward penguin ever imaginable because I knew absolutely no one and said roommate was no where to be found.

At the end of the first day, I was in this big city from the rural farm area, with no one I knew. I was scared and alone and I thought my room mate was going to kill me. I went inside at 10pm to sleep. I never really was the going out type before coming to college so this was all strange and foreign to me. The room was tight and plain. It wasn't home. I had to cook for myself and try and cope. Jesus christ. MAMMY.

Would I change a thing? HELL NO. It was the BEST. EXPERIENCE. EVER.

No matter what, of course your gonna experience nerves. All of the above happened to me and I hated it. But I didn't let it stop me having a good college experience, one thing I found I learned that you had to get comfortable with the uncomfortable for it to be comfortable. I didn't let the fear get a hold of me. I went outside, I went to all the fresher events (the ones that didn't involve you being over 18 anyway) and ended up meeting some of the best friends ever. We all lived in Larkfield. We made a ****ty dingy place home. I actually am so happy I couldn't go to those over 18 events. You make the closest and dear friends sober.

Be excited for the challenge of living on your own. It ends up being class. Despite its bad reputation of being noisy and annoying at times, it is brilliant. I hated noise when trying to get to sleep. But you get over it and get used to it. If it gets too much, security are there to your distressed call. This is coming from the person who hates DCU security.

Take it as a chance to learn, grow and prosper. DCU is an incredible college with plenty of help to be found. It also homes some amazing people. Recall stories of late nights of telling stories, getting to know each other, cooking together, watching movies, visiting the park, when I turned 18, hitting the town and dancing the night away (I'm not that big of a drinker but didn't let that stop me going out to town and going feckin mad on a night out). They are good times and bad times, you will meet the people who you will experience all of this with. Just go to college with the courage to put yourself out there and meet people - no matter what accommodation you get or what college you go to.

No matter what, you will be very lucky to get to college and indeed Larkfield is expensive for what it is. For all the memories I've gained there; it was worth it down to the last fire alarm and dripping ceiling. In the end, we were all emotional to leave the place. It became our second home. You end up loving these people who you trek to spar with to find sweets. You use the window on the second floor to perv on the talent. You go to the park to go on the swings to just de-stress because we were mature. You spoon for warmth.

To use a highly cliché and statement that annoys me greatly: YOLO. Go for Larkfield.

EDIT: It is a long time away but me and my friends living in Hampstead who all met through Larkfield, will all be at the Larkfield Rave when its on. Any boardsies will have a few friendly faces to welcome you to the crazy world of college!

If you have any specific questions about DCU/Computer Apps/the area - feel free to ask here or message me!

    That ^

I lived in Larkfield when I was in first year and it was the biggest ****hole I've ever come across...but it was our ****hole.

One thing, I still, to this day, believe that the beds in Larkfield are the most comfortable I've ever slept in.

If you get offered Larkfield, take it, you'll love it.

Would you recommend applying to share with someone you know? Could be dodgy ending up with a stranger!

Sounds like most people who went there found it to be amazing, I think I may take the plunge and go for it :)

If you have someone you can share with, by all means go for it.

    Hey guys.

I'm just writing on behalf of three of my friends who will be on exchange in DCU next year from Japan.

Unfortunately they did not receive on-campus accommodation, so I'm helping them look at other options.

Anyone know any good options for three Japanese girls. It seems Shanowen Hall etc. are booked, and they seem a bit pricey. Anyone know how I could even go about renting a home/rooms nearby.

    Course: Actuarial Mathematics
    Age: 24

Areas: Close enough to walk/cycle to campus
    Price for room: Around €400

I plan to be on campus from 9 am - 6 pm Monday - Friday, irrespective of scheduled classes. Not looking for a party house, but would be nice to have a bit of fun!

Feel free to pm me if this sounds at all like what you're after

-Potentially will need 1 extra house mate to fill a 5 bed house situated outside the gates of DCU

    - All own bedrooms in very nice clean warm house

-340 per month not including bills however bills shouldn't be too much on top.

    - would suit female. Sharing with four other females. We're all really sociable but it wont be a party house as 2 of us are in final year and 1 other is on work placement.

    - we are viewing the house on tuesday at 3pm and are hoping to take it so we are going with references and deposit of 340 euro at the ready.

    - PM if interested :)

Going into first year of Communications and looking for accommodation, my back up is Schoolhouse Court but I'd prefer to rent a house between three or four people anywhere from 300 - 450 a month, pm if interested. I've been looking at three bedroom apartments in Glasnevin for 1050 so 350 per month. Also, can anyone share first hand experience of Schoolhouse Court? thanks

Few people asking about Schoolhouse Court, I lived there.

It's grand. 3 bedrooms to an apartment, very well furnished, good internet. It is a bit pricey considering how far away it is. It's up past the Omni shopping centre. So you're close to Tesco, which is good. 20 minute walk to DCU minimum, and I'm a fast walker :P

Bus stop right outside your door though so if you're lazy.. :pac:

It's fairly quiet, not really a party place. I had a party and the people downstairs were not impressed. It's secure and safe. Has a downstairs laundry room, think it's 3 euro each to use the washing machine and dryer.

Overall, it's a nice place to live, and if you have 1 or 2 people to share with, even better, cause myself and my friend got an absolute freak of a housemate :P But that's a risk no matter where you go!
Also, it's been over a year since I lived there, so some things may have changed, but I'd assume most of what I said still applies :)
