Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Nice topic, alliteration and all!. I think even alot of people on boards would be nerdos. Archery is pretty cool, I've always wanted to get into it ever since I saw "the weatherman" (or what ever it's called, nicholas cage is in it).

    That's a nice bookshelf paperclip.

As for myself. I was once ranked 42nd in the world at age of empires 3, and was consistantly the top irish player. I am a big fan of russian literature (well, a few of my favourite authors are russian... but I'll count this anyway). I perform well academically. In my younger days I used to spend up to 6 hours playing baldur's gate, daily. I have a very large collection of "The avengers". I nearly have the entire collectino of "wally's world" and "wally's history of the world. I am heading off to college now to do theoretical physics.

Also , It came to my attention recently that I have a "nerd" hairstyle when my hair is long enough. It's all swept to the side and what have you.

Edit: heh, yeah doom the funky base loses you alot of nerd points :P.

    Shooting birds isn't cool teutorix..

not really if you understand this then you really are a nerd.

Why do nerds think Halloween and Christmas are the same?

    Because 31 Oct = 25 Dec.

I’d consider myself to have nerdy traits but I think if people meet me it’d take a while for that to come out.

Firstly, boards. I spend a lot of time here and have lots of online friends. When I tell my real life friends I’m going to boards beers they think I’m mad.

I like computer games and spend a bit of time playing them.

I have a degree in Chemistry!

    I'm a member of a very nerdy online forum called boards.ie :D

    I'm studying Physics & Maths @ college :o

When I was in 2nd Year, I won our school's chess competition.

    I love watching Countdown.

I regain some cool points because I have a bass  And lose them again because I can't actually play it :(

To be honest is being called a nerd such a bad thing?
basicly the other person is calling you smart! WTF? not much of an insult!

I'd prefer any social issues I have (which I don't :P) to manifest itself as nerdish/geekiness rather than juvenile and skanger-like anyday!

    science olympiad type stuff - I even have the medals to prove it.. ;_;

I do maths for the sake of it at times - no idea why I'm not doing it in college!

    I can't think of anything else but I know there's more.. :(

Heh, yeah. I think really the word can be offensive or not depending the intention of the person calling you it. The definition smarter child gives seems a bit off.... not very nice tbh

*nerd*:NounSlang 1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person. 2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.EtymologyPerhaps after Nerd, a character in If I Ran the Zoo, by Theodor Seuss Geisel.

humm, I don't think any modern intepretation has "foolish" in it.

... it seems my text has gone blue

Actually I disagree. A nerd to me is someone who's interests fall outside the parameters of what society considers an acceptable pursuit. The social side comes into it because this can make them something of a pariah.

Someone who knows everything about LFC doesn't suffer the way some one who knows, say, everything about linux distributions would. One considered normal, the other nerdy.

the foolish inept unattractive sounds more reminiscent of the modern use of geek

I'm not a nerd but then again I'm not really on this forum.

Though I do read Harry Potter and hav me ECDL.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

it actually used to annoy me back in secondary school, i used to be called a nerd for liking computers. but now i just realise they were just hypocrites as they all have their faces plastered all over bebo and the likes.

Is there a large difference between a nerd and a geek?

Geek definatly sounds kinda nasty though, I certainly wouldn't like to be called a geek.

but is it just coincidence that nerds generally turn out successful. bill gates is a prime example, he was a computer nerd and is now the richest man alive.

well a nerd is commonly used to describe people who are smart, whilst geek tends to refer to more to people who are socially inept.nerds in American teen culture is more the way the phrase is used. a nerds are generally geeky yet geeks are not neccisarly nerdy.

Do i make any sense? of course i dont i never do!

    Liverpool Football Club!

Well, I am a nerd yet I can talk so much ****e I was in sales for 10 years. I may have issues but social ineptness is not one. :)

    Actual quote
15yr old sister to me "why do all your friends know about computers?"
Mother responds "cuz all her friends are nerds that's why" :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,148 ✭✭✭✭KnifeWRENCH

Whether or not "nerd" is an insult depends on the context it's used in.

If someone said I was a nerd because I'm smart, I'd be flattered.

However, if they called me a nerd to insult me (like accuse me of social ineptitude) I woul not like that.

    Nerd? me?*
