    Hi Folks

i'm looking for a decent spcec mtb for my 13yr old son for xmas. could anyone recommend me something in the 400 euro range please?

he's able to ride my cube analog but it's just a bit n the big side for him. I'm thinking something in an adults S or XS would fit him. he's jut 5ft at the moment

    cheers

I think "Decent Spec" is relative. The OP isn't looking for a full suspension carbon frame wonder bike. They just want something a bit better than a Smyths Toys lump of metal.
Have a look at this, slightly over budget but looks solid and has lifetime frame warranty
    Giant ATX

You could try Halfords, they have plenty of similar spec and price bikes, although they have some cheap rubbish too.

yes, that's exactly the type of thing i'm looking for - thanks for that

I found this one on special, as I'm not familiar with what constitutes a good groupset on a mtb, would this be a similar spec to the giant?

Orbea offer good value in kids bikes, have a 24" wheel bike on order for my daughter they are incredibly well specced for the price.

Fulll shimano groupset with hydraulic discs it looks to be amazing value. Don't know how long he'd get out of it but the reach is the same as the small orbea 27.5 mtbs

Daraxtor is right about looking at halfords! this is a steal @ €325 if he's tall enough for the 16"

    What size is your cube?

The merida has a better fork and gears than the giant but delivery is £74!

Suntour xcm/xcr forks are better than the xct on the giant and orbea 27.5, the radon air fork on the boardman is a big step up and much more capable of road. Can't imagine you can beat it for value and spec for less than €500

    Cheers for the advice!!
That is a good deal alright - my cube is a 17" - he probably would be ok with a 16.
Pity I missed that boardman as I pulled the trigger on the merida. Managed to get free delivery as getting it delivered to my in-laws in Derry. So it's costing 356 with the exchange rate

I'd like to thank the op for asking the question and Ryath for finding this, I went to halfords Drogheda for a look , decent kit for the online price very limited availability but the bike hut guy was so helpful , searched the few remaining available and advised me to reserve online as the shop to online difference was €257.00 he actually thought it was a mistake.
Eventually reserved two for my son and nephew at a big saving .
So the end result is two very happy teens on crimbo morning and the red man can look after the wee ones even better .
Great result from cycling boards !
