    So,

A small indie-type band/duo. Looking to play some gigs in mainland Europe. A booking agency is sorting the gigs out for us, but what would be the best solution for getting to and from each city?
Would love to hear from musicians who have actually done this.

Do you take your own van/transport (assuming we're looking at a ferry trip across to Northern France for starters...)?
Or do you fly over and rent most of what you need? We'd need to take some equipment with us though, there's certain stuff we couldn't rent (laptop, midi controllers, etc)

So yeah, if you're a band that has been through this, let me know! You don't have to name names!

We've done a fair bit of the Europe thing. Where are you heading to?

    Germany, Poland, France, etc...
Did you drive yourselves over? What did you do for transport? Ferry across to where...?

We've done it several ways. We took a van over to Spain and flew the rest of the band over. It involved two ferries - one from Irl to France and then one from France to Spain. That worked out well because we were self sufficient with travel for the tour but it is pricey enough.

What we have done since is fly to be honest. This is mainly because we have managed to get the agents to factor costs in when booking tours for us. Its bloody expensive because of the rip-off airlines charging a fortune to carry instruments.

If you are carrying a lot of equipment, defo look at the ferry option.

My main advice would be to make sure you get paid well enough to cover transport, which is the biggest expense by far. You will find that many venues abroad will put you up and feed you which is a great bonus that venues in Ireland could do well to do as well.
