Do it! It gets much harder down the line with wife, kids, mortgage etc.

For a little help in choosing what you want to do, check out www.careerdirections.ie

I'd reccomend primarily to try and persue something you'd enjoy and get a great deal of personal satisfaction from over financial gain.

    Good luck.

    1. If you don't know what you want to do how do you know you'll need to go back to college?

    2. The most important advice I can give is decide where you want to be in say 5 years time and work back from there to find out what you need to do today. Don't just start on step 1 of X career and go blindly from there. Look to the end of the path and plan the require steps backwards.

    3. What field are you in? Has it provided you with any insight into possible work you would like to do and more importantly, any skills you can use to get where you want to be?

Science degree? What science did you specialise in, Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics?

I did a Biology degree and then a PhD in molecular Biology. Within a year of starting my post-doc as a lab scientist I realised that job security and career progress were non-existent as a lab scientist and that my salary could actually drop depending on the research grants despite my increasing experience. I watched post-docs ten year my senior end up on the dole for 6 months while they waited for research funding to come through.

So a change of career was in order! I knew that I liked writing about my research and decided to become a medical writer. So I searched Google to find out if such a thing was possible and discovered the medical communications/education industry and from there got into medical writing. I'm now Director of the Medical Writing department in my company and am far happier than I was as a lab scientist. However, I live in England where this industry is big, it's not so big in Ireland at all so finding jobs at home (which I desperately want to do) will be difficult, especially at the level I want.

So career change is possible. Decide where you'd like to be in 5 years (as has already been said). Think about what your perfect job would entail. Use Goolge and talk to people. Good luck. :)
