Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull...

i dont understand how people can say they loved it and will watch it again and again...

it was crap and thats an understatement...

i was always a huge fan of the original trilogy... gritty, exciting, wonder, adventure, violent and a bit of the supernatural.

this new one went way over the top... the CGI was so bad... the first bloody shot of the film was a CGI praire dog...

Indiana Jones is about realism and proper stunts... im sure alot of people watched Indy when they were a kid and have lost count of how much they watched the old ones...they are classics

the new one didnt capture the magic of the old ones...its a definition of how films are today...

everybody is invincible and can do outrageous and unbelievable stuff...

they dont make them like they used to thats for sure

The Lord of the Rings was fairly awful. Had to leave that one half way through
Your story doesn't check out. There's three of them!

I actually quite liked the film, but your post was hilarious!

silly statement. it's just as logical to say that OUR posts are the same because they have some of the same letters.:P

anyway, seing as you think The Shawahank Redemption and Citizen Kane (two fantastic films! In YOUR opinion) are overrated In MY Opinion, i can't take you that seriousley:D;)

I can't take someone seriously when they don't use capital letters and punctuate correctly. If it makes you feel superior to like these films then good for you. I think they are overrated along with the following:

    Batman Begins
    Forrest Gump
    The Maltese Falcon

Has anyone mentioned Lost in Translation with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johannson? Damn that was 2 hours I genuinely wished I had back. I was really looking forward to it after the critical acclaim it recieved too.

How about underrated films? Mine have gotta be From Dusk till Dawn and Pitch Black I think

Yes! Finally, other people that thought Gangs of New York, and American History X were terribly over rated! Also the Kill Bills were really over rated. Shocking over indulgence from Taranteno.

Ya got to admit i found that painful to endure, but does brad pitt really deserve to be cast in what should have been a deep focused role..it was like joe black meets bonanza

see its all about relevence... as a gentleman (i am ok no smart comments ) who is heading towards bill murrays age. this movie is a source of hope and inspiration.if he can pull scarlett j. "surely i can pull the polish girl working in the deli of me local spar".
hold on wow lets make that movie.
when albert met gosia. aka diary of a polish deli sausage handler

How come that there were mentioned already quite a few films, that have a little more hidden story line. The films that are more about personal development, internal fights and thoughts.
I always thought that word overrated should be used for commercially hyped and advertsied films, that are genuinely not good. Like 300 or Last Action Hero.
This kind of thread seems to be really pointless. :(

saying something is overrated does NOT mean you dont like it. for instance, i love both LOTR and the Matrix, but i still think they are both very overrated, as is the new Doctow Who television series.

overrated films i HATE include Godzila (54)

How long has it been on this thread since somebody actually gave a compelling argument or a good reason as to why a film is overrated?

Threads like this are absolutely pointless if every post is just going to be:

    "X film...that was crap"
    "Y film.....it was boring"
"The following are overrated: A film, B Film, C film, D film"

Hardly constructive stuff is it....not that I would expect anybody to give a good reason or a compelling argument as to why they feel the Godfather, Citizen Kane or Taxi Driver are overrated;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,594 ✭✭✭Mal-Adjusted

very well, i'll justify why G'54 is overrated.
It is claimed to be a pioneer of great visual effects. in reality, it was outdated even for then. the guy in a suit several sizes too bug looks less real than the monsters from King Kong, which was made in 1933! now, if a film had visualls that were outclassed by a film that's 21 years older, i'd want my money back. it's like comparing the visuals in Sunshint to those of Highlander.

the much Lauded anti-nuglear message of the film occupies less than three sentences at the end and a handfull more throughout. this is not something to judge a film by! Supernam IV: The quest for peace has a stronger anti-nuke message...and that was still a bad film.

The acting is so wooden i thought for a moment Pat Kenny was in this film, but for a monster flick, i guess acting talent doesn't matter.

The science. Mother...Of ...God! in this excuse for a movie, they think Godzilla (Gojira, whatever) is an ancient god from the Jurassic period (so far so good) two million years ago. ?? what? don't you mean 150 millipn years ago? also they found some Trilobites from the Jurassic period (Really, the last died out in the Devonian) 2 million years ago (Really 359)

The reason this is overrated is that it was the most expensive (and most popular) japanese film of it's time. America loved creature features at the time and just latched onto it. it's now become almost taboo to speak ill of it, (similar to the Godfather and Pulp Fiction)

Hey, you're entitled to your opinion, and so am I. Didn't do any thing for me. Never said it was bad.

There is no over-rated. There's just films some people love that don't appeal to you.

i cant remember whether or not gangs of new york was highly rated , personally i thought it sucked balls

as for american history x , i think it is possibly a little over rated

i think the 1st batman movie with christian bale is over rated
i think all the harry potter movies are over rated , so too the chronicles of narnia , someone mentioned x men , i never could get any of those

btw , can i add one of my favourite underrated movies , jackie brown

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,594 ✭✭✭Mal-Adjusted

jackie brown isn't underrated. it's considered a bad film because it IS a bad film. i tried watching it but just got fed up and stuck on Aliens.

I nominate The Usual Suspects, good film but i don't see the big deal. My dislike of Kevin Spacey doesn't help either.

    Anchorman

And one I saw more recently, Pineapple Express. I even thought James Franco's performance was overated...

    overrated - dictionary result
    o-ver-rate

–verb (used with object), -rat-ed, -rat-ing. to rate or appraise too highly; overestimate:

see mawkish, oversentimental perennial Empire magazine chart topping rubbish The Shawshank Redemption.

Cant believe I forgot 300. The Police Academy films had a deeper script and more intelligent storyline than that monstrosity.

300 wasnt trying to be intelligent or deep. It was trying to be exactly what it was (action flick). So if you went expecting deep and intelligent i feel you lack in both:p

    Donnie Darko

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Deep, intelligent or not, I still agree that 300 was overrated.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 58 ✭✭SoulReaperDan1

Yeah Donnie Darko requires at least 2 watches, and everyone that owns a copy seems to only have it cos they kept it that time they gave it out in the Sunday Independent!! I liked Jake Gyllenhal's performance though.

Also Jackie Brown is good, it's well scripted and shot, and has a fantastic soundtrack.

Yep 300 was violent, if stunning, trash. "Tonight, we dine in HELL!!"
Saying that I'm really looking forward to sin city 2 :D

Two films that got best picture in the Oscars.

No Country For Old Men - I liked it but I think it is totally overrated. The ending was a load of pants.

As Good As It Gets - Likeable film but totally overrated. Cannot see how it won best picture.

I don't know how anyone can question the Usual Suspects. One of the best movie endings of all time!

Actually I thought it was trying to be an historical epic like Gladiator, but failing miserably.

So you haven't seen it, right? Not that I love the film or anything, but declaring a film overrated that you haven't seen is ludicrous.

Neither can I, as it didn't! It went to one of thoose stupid artsy Indy movies that year that is totally over-rated:
