This is all great info and really helping me with my research. Please feel free to add if anything comes to mind.

I'm not having much look finding copies of old Religion or Gaeilge books.

I loved Religion 'cos we always got to draw pictures:)..oh the joys of it, I can still remember the smell of the crayons in my warm little hand and those cool little stories with the little cartoon illustrations (where all the characters had big noses) in the text books:o.
I remember for our First Communion, singing 'Suffer little children' and one I haven't heard since 'Sons of God'(-'hear his holy word, gather round the table of the Lord, eat His Body, drink His Blood, now we'll sing a song of love, allehlu, allehlu, allehlu, allehluia').
For Confirmation we sang 'All the earth proclaim the Lord' which was a responsorial type hymn...and 'Come Holy Spirit'. The Latin one we sang was Veni Creator-
    Veni, creator Spiritus
    mentes tuorum visita,
    imple superna gratia,
    quae tu creasti pectora.

Im not religious at all, and Hated Religion class.
But I did get a yellow book of songs that they used to sing
at Church when I was a kid.

There was one where I liked the Lyrics as it was more story
    like:

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord
That is the reason the Scriptures record
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord

Well the Lord looked down from gis window in the sky
And said I created man but I don't remember why
Nothin' but fightin' since creation day
I'll send a little water and I'll wash'em all away

So the Lord came down to look around a spell
And there he found Noah behavin' mighty well
And that is the reason the Scriptures record
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord...

The Lord said Noah there's gonna be a flood
And there's gonna be some water and there's gonna be some mud
Take off your hat Noah and take off your coat
Get a handshave and shave that and build yourself a boat

Noah said Lord I don't believe I could
The Lord said Noah get some sturdy gopher wood
Ya never know what you can do till you try
Build it fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord...

Now Noah said there it is there it is Lord
The Lord said Noah it's time to get aboard
Now take a creature a he and a she
And of course Mrs Noah and the whole family

Noah said Lord it's gettin' mighty dark
The Lord said Noah get these creatures in the ark
Noah said Lord it's beginnin' to pour
The Lord said Noah hurry up and shut the door

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord...

Well the ark rose up on the foot of the deep
And after forty days Mr Noah took a peek said
We ain't movin' Lord where are we at
The Lord said you're sittin' on a mount Ararat

Noah said Lord it's gettin' mighty dry
The Lord said Noah see My rainbow in the sky
Take all the creatures and people to earth
And don't be more trouble than you're worth

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord
And he landed high and dry and he landed high and dry
And he landed high and dry

    Thanks Shifty,
I've pretty much exhausted all of the online resources. The National Archives is a great resource but does not keep copies of old books for obvious reasons. TBH Gaeilge is the focus of my academic study but I must admit that all of this digging really is bringing back a lot of memories and I'm enjoying looking at other subjects, even if nothing comes of it.

    "Fish grow fins
To tickle and wriggle and swim
Birds grow beaks to peck and pick
And I'm growing up to be me."

  • Registered Users Posts: 243 ✭✭OrangeDaisy

This is bringing back so many memories!!! This one I remember is
'Home is happy, home is glad,
Home is with my mam and dad,
Home is mam and dad and me, playing together after tea'
There's a bit more to it but I remember we weren't allowed to sing it after a few years, it was taken off the curriculum.

'It is right to give you thanks and praise-for people around who love me'.

    'Children gather round the lord-listen,
hear the message of his word-listen'.

    The shoe shine boy song!

Does anyone have copies of these old tapes?????? I tried Veritas but no luck

I don't remember any of those I'm afraid and I was a nineties kid

I used to love All Things Bright And Beautiful, I am the Lord of The Dance (or something to that effect) and Shine, Jesus Shine (I think I only like that one because I had to sing it in a school play)

I remember Shine Jesus Shine, but only from one of those US bible-belt Christian CDs that was advertised ad nausem on Screensport

    Songs i can recall
    Sing Hosanna
    Cead Mile Faile, a Iosa
He's got the whole world in His pants hands
And a hymn with the line "peace is flowing like a river" which I always thought was just asking to be misheard...

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Anyone have "There's one way to peace..." when they were in school?

    Went something like this:

There's one way to peace by the power of the cross and his banner over me his love,
    Repeat
    Repeat
His banner, over me, his love.

Did it on the altar for my Communion with actions and all.

    Was class.

come sing a song of joy
for god is like a father
sing sing a song of joy
for he said love each other

come people of god and sing
a song that will ring for evermore
    and then something something something
for god is like a father

can't remember anymore, but does this ring a bell with anyone?

I dunno if anyone remembers but there was one we learned called Harrembay or something?....

One of the verses was something like

Here at home in Ireland our complaints are few,
We can look around and find so many things to do,
Seeds and schools and factories with plently and to share,
With people near and far away to make our lives more fair...

Harrembay harrembay harrembay, lets grow together,
    Harrembay, day by day

(dont think the words were Harrembay though)

There was one about zachaus too...

Zacheus was a tiny little man,
He frightened all the people in the land,
If their rent they couldnt pay he would take their home away,
and their furniture and everything they had

    something like that!

I came in to say that one

Zacchaeus was a greedy little man
He cheated all the people in the land
when the rent they did not pay
He would take their lands away
And their furniture and everything they had

    Zacchayyyyy...us, Zacchayyy...us:) Oh the memories.

    Anyone remember 'freely'.

Freely, freely, you have recieved, freely, freely give
Go in my name and because you believe,
others will know that I live.

Or 'Praise God'. This had some real dark minor chords in it. Really liked it.

'Praise God, praise him, praise the name of our lord.

Sahadows and sunlight, dew from the morning air
All that is yours you love oh lord of liiiiife.

    Praise God.....
remeber 'growing up' and the apostles song too.

    "Fish grow fins
To tickle and wriggle and swim
Birds grow beaks to peck and pick
And I'm growing up to be me."

    growing up,growing up to be,
a caterpillar grows into a butterfly,
and a seed grows into a flower,
    fish grow fins,
to wriggle and wraggle and swim,
birds grow beaks to peck and pick,
and im growing up to be me.

think thats the version i learnt anyway

I remember Cead Mile Failte Romhat a Iosa, When Creation was Begun, Walk in the Light, He's got the Whole World in his hands, Give me Joy in my Heart, Be Not Afraid, Zacchaeus (I had to read the story of him at my first confession, couldn't pronounce his name), and a few more.

My mum was in charge of the choir at mass for years, and was responsible for coming to the school to teach the school choir the songs for Communion and Confirmation. I'm sure there are tapes and song books lying round at home - I will ask her if she has any information and I'll post here - if that's any help to anyone.

This was my favourite one - I loved singing it:

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, And his righteousness
And all these things shall be added unto you,
    Allelu- Alleluia.
    AAAAAAAlllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeellllluuuuuuuuiiiiiiiaaaaa :D

When I was in primary school in the early 80s we had 'Home is happy, home is glad, home is with my mum and dad'.

    Damn those orphans to hell.

    SNAP...loved that song.

We had to learn it for the first holy communion. I remember all the songs used to be printed in the abck of our religion book (called The Good News if i remember correctly).

God our father looks on us with love, all the time....all the time,
He says i will love you all the time, he says i will love you all the time,
I will love you forever, I will love you forever, I will love you forever all the time...

...still remeber the actions to that one as well;)

can never remember the apostles one properly thou

there was peter and mark, james and john, dadada and his brother jude, there was phillip and bartholamew, simon and matthew too, there was judas ascariot, there was someone else (luke ?) and thats the lot :o

My favourite was Hail glorious st patrick. Such a nationalistic song and I still remember it every St Patrick's day even though it is many years of only singing it once a year since I first learned it

I distinctly remember this one we learned when our school visited another school and we felt like big show-offs teaching the other kids the song:

"It's beginning to rain (add more "a's" for longer syllables"), said the voice of my father. Saying whosoever will come drink from the water. I promise to pour my spirit out on my sons and my daughters.." Don't remember the rest but we did all hand gestures for the song!
When we sang the word "rain", we wiggled our fingers! LOL

Also remember singing "I The Lord" in church every week with the class and this girl who thought she had the best voice ever, always sang it when deep down, I feckin wanted to sing it
