    hi guys ive a 03 ovtavia tdi 110bhp and occasionally around 3000rpm i loose turbo boost..i tried new air mass sensor and it made no difference..ive checked the actuator on the turbo which is mechanical and its fine..had the car on a diagnostic and no fault codes.
    id the car to one mechanic who told me that the veins in the turbo were sticking causing actuator problems which put the car into limp home mode ie no boost. ive very recently had the car at a turbo specialist who coould apparently tell by revving the engine with a diagnostic attached that a vein in the turbo was bent and when the car heated up under load was causing the actuator to stick which inturn told the ecu there was no oil pressure which put the car into limp home mode. His solution 450 euro for a recon turbo and nearly 600 euro labour to fit and guarantee..if id the money id probably get him to do it but i dont. Every mechanic i speak to has a different opinion so im just throwing it out there if any body has come across a similiar problem. mine has 160k on it and you can tell shes been well looked after..any constructive advise appreciated:D

    Hi there, it sounds like the turbo is bolloxed, you can try to buy a turbo core and try to rebuild and fit yourself but if you are not 100% confident buy a reconditioned turbo and get a specialist to fix it

    Uncle of mine had an octavo and the very same thing happened it's a turbo failure

    its hard to see it being the turbo as the car goes fantastic except for this little glich once and a while..got a specialist to look at it and he thinks definitely core trouble with the turbo..450 euro for a recon turbo and OVER 600 euro labour to fit and guarantee!!:eek:

    thanks ybfocus ive been having a chat with myself since tuesday tbh..dont have the money and dont want to risk spending couple of hundred on a s/hand turbo and getting it fitted when it may not solve the issue..so ive decided to do nothing for the moment :confused:

    I was talking about flaming toaster man if you look at his two posts :)

    On your front I would have jumped straight at the air flow meter also but since that didn't fix it I'd get it plugged in and see what codes she gives back, limp mode will mean that there is codes on there. If you get that done and come back with exactly what is said maybe me or someone else might have an idea.
    You could never tell you had a bent blade in your turbo from diagnostics don't know where he got that unless he's used to it and that's what it always ends up being or something!

    ya thats a point i made to him actually. He said he could tell from the pressure testing he done. he said that he had it on a diagnostic and he showed me the core of another turbo he had in the garage. explained exactly what he thinks is hapenning. Said he has seen it on those turbos before. i was suprised at how flimsy the vanes actually are. the new core he puts in is way stronger and looks a much better job. he said its the original turbo and id done well to get as much as i did out of it. i just dont have 1000euro to put into a car thats worth 3 tops know what i mean.

    Boost pressure not oil pressure ;)

    It sounds like you are getting an underboost fault code:

    This could be caused by a wide range of issues, only one of which is sticky vanes in the turbo. It could be a damaged or loose vacuum hose, a faulty boost control solenoid, a faulty turbo actuator, even a boost leak on a hose or on the intercooler can cause this fault code.

    You have had it diagnosed separately by two different people and they both reckon it is the turbo. I hope for their sake and for yours that they aren't both wrong!

    €450 for the turbo isn't too far off the mark for a garage to supply and stand over with warranty. If you buy one yourself you will get it cheaper but the quality may be suspect and then you are leaving yourself open to further expense if anything goes wrong.

    €600 for fitting and associated parts is a bit on the high side, you can certainly do better than that.

If anything went wrong garage would blame the supplier and vice versa

    Well if you aren't happy with his terms then use somebody else. There is no shortage of reputable suppliers for turbos in this country.

    He is within his rights to quote you whatever price he wants for the job. You can then either choose to get him to do the job or go elsewhere. It's quite simple really.

    It is also worth noting that with your car's VNT problem the whole issue of changing oil lines and flushing the engine shouldn't arise because the problem with your turbo has nothing to do with oil pressure or supply. There are plenty of turbo failure cases where it is very important do do all of that work and that would mean that his quote of €600 would be more realistic but yours is not one of those cases.

    I was on this website TURBOCENTRAS.IE and the site is quoting 340euro for a recon turbo..has anybody ever used this crowd in Limerick to supply and fit? And how did ye find them?

    Rang that crowd out in Eastway will supply reconditioned turbo for 340euro and fit for 150euro..seems a lot more reasonable..i dont feel too bad now actually thats a little more manageable. im still gonna swap my mafs with a mates car for a few days just for the pig iron.. My own car is driving perfectly well 99% of the time so im not in any rush. Thanks for the helpful posts people :D
