I just got an offer for NPCAM in trinity but I'm very worried. You see I haven't done chemistry for leaving cert and I am worried that I will be at a disadvantage. Chemistry is a large pillar of NPCAM but I know feck all a about it. Any advice or words to relieve my mental suffering !??!?

    Thanks.

Wow. You got the highest course in Ireland...

If that's the case. I think you're going to be just fine with learning some chemistry.

If chemistry was needed to be able to cope with this course, they would've set it as a prerequisite as they have for their pharmacy course I believe.

Sorry if this isn't particularly helpful, but congrats on getting at least 595 :)

I'm going into second year Science and I'm studying Maths/Chemistry/Physics - Exact same lectures as NPCAM students do for the first 2 years.

I did Chemistry for LC but really it doesn't mean much at all. I got an A1 in chemistry in the LC but ended up not doing well in first year because I decided i don't want to specialise in it and just ignored it throughout the year (ie doing well in LC doesn't guarantee you'll do well in the final exams). On the other hand, I know a few people who didn't do Chem for LC and ended up doing ok or even well, all depending on how much work they put in throughout the year.

First half of the year is a lot of physical chemistry - perhaps things you don't expect from chemistry, seems really a lot more like physics than chemistry and a lot of people end up hating it although you'll be just fine if you did physics for LC and continue working through the year.
Second half of the year is organic chemistry which literally less than 0.1% is covered of in the LC. Nobody has any idea what they're doing.

Anyway, don't worry about it at all. You're in a good place, and will just need to adjust to the college work instead of school which you'll do fine with considering your points.

Also keep in mind that college can be really fun. A lot of new experiences and many more distractions from work than in school. This is good. Take first year seriously but not too seriously. Trust me, with your points you are much much much above many people in those lectures (even if not necessarily NPCAM, but this won't matter since you'll only really be doing NPCAM exclusive material in 3rd and 4th year. You'll catch up before then ;) )
