    Hi ladies!

I'm hoping to get some advice on getting a Hollywood wax done. I've never got a wax done before but I'm strongly considering. I hate the hair down there and I'd really like to get it off. I think it would make things a lot easier/hygienic during menstruation too. Obviously though I'm nervous as hell about the pain side of things! Is it unbearable?

It would be so worth getting it done though so I'm hoping to get some advice. I've never waxed any body part before. I regularly get my eyebrows waxed, they don't hurt me at all. A beautician said I must have a fairly high pain threshold (but I don't know if that would make a difference when it comes to a Hollywood as there's naturally a huge difference.)

I've read on here about Brazilia, a salon in Dublin I believe? Many women on here really recommended them and said that they use hot wax is best. Can anyone else recommend Brazillia/have good stories about then? I'm strongly considering going to them. At least I know I won't be butchered! (Fingers crossed!) Also, any tips on general to get rid of nerves,etc..? Would taking painkillers be a help beforehand. Also, when is the best time to get it done. I remember reading somewhere before that it's better to get done closer to your period/a few days after it ends (can't remember which it was.)

Thanks for any replies in advance, really appreciate it!

    Hi.

I've been getting these waxes for years and they're really not as painful an experience as you might think! Biggest thing to look out for is that they use Lycon wax. It's the best by far.

I've used Brazilia in the past and they are excellent, they have 2 salons in Dublin. Can also recommend UrbanWax, Waxperts (Dun Laoghaire) and WaxWorx (Dundrum). I go to WaxWorx myself.

If you wanted you could take 2 painkillers before you go in but I don't think you'll need them. If you've never been waxed before maybe think about doing a little trim yourself before you go to have this done. As for timing, I wouldn't go around the time of my period but that's because I generally feel a bit crap rather than anything to do with the wax being more painful. Obviously, waxing when you have your period is a no-no.

    Best of luck

This is probably a stupid question but do you wear underwear or go commando during the waxing ??
I wore nothing and my friend was horrified but I just imagine any underwear would stick to the wax??

If you have never been waxed i would suggest you go to Waxperts in Dun Laoighre. It is the most painfree waxing i have ever had done.
If having a Hollywood it is usual not to wear any underwear. Some places provide paper thongs.

I really don't know how you would get a Hollywood with your undies on?! Even for a simple bikini tidy, you're better off taking them off.

Brazilia are very good I find. It hurts a little in some parts, but its so worth it. I have since had laser removal, so haven't had a wax in over a year, but from memory a brazilian took about 30mins so a hollywood would prob take about the same time. I used to pop two nurofen about 20 mins beforehand to reduce pain.
You def do not wear underwear, dignity is left at the door! But remember that your therapist is a professional.

If you have never had a bikini wax before I would suggest starting with a regular or a high brief bikini wax, just to see how you get on. The first waxing of a new area can be pretty sore but after a few returns to get the area re-waxed the hair is much easier to wax out and then you can be a bit braver in getting more hair off.

This is speaking as someone who has been getting their legs waxed for 2 years now and it doesn't hurt a bit but I got my bikini line waxed last month for the first time in a year and I found it quite sore.

That's what I thought too. She wears a thong and uses it to pull the skin tight, she couldn't believe I wore nothing. She'd me thinking I was weird :)

Definitely recommend Waxperts, I've been going there for years. Their own brand of wax is the closest thing to painfree. They also never double dip, way too many places do and it's gross and dangerous.

Hollywood is definitely done without underwear, they take all the hair so underwear would make it impossible!

Whaaa? Ok you're definitely not the weird one :pac:

Anyway, I go to Wax in the City. The wax is very hot but I find they do a good job. It's just walk in so you'll always get an appointment.

Do Wax In The City only do strip waxing for bikini waxes or is it hot wax (peel off)?

Thanks for the replies guys! I was going to wear knickers..( i mean i know obviously they won't do it in parts, but still...)

Oh I'm not bothered about them seeing "down there" at all! I know they've seen it all before and I don't even have THAT much hair tbh so that doesn't bother me. Hey sure when I go for spray tans I have my boobs completely out. I know it's not the same but it's still a pretty intimate body part!

The only thing that's worrying me is the pain..and the possible ingrown hairs afterwards! Definitely going to Brazillia/Waxperts though, seems like they really know their stuff so i know they'll advice me and not butcher me (hopefully!!)

Has anyone been to both? Which is better? The travel would be worth it if it meant close to pain free :p

Go to Waxperts. I live in meath and travel to them...
They also have their own brand of pads that you can use to fight ingrown hairs. But if you are getting a good quality wax then it should jot be too much of an issue.

As a newbie to waxing i think Waxperts will give you your best experience.

I've been getting Brazilian waxed since I was 19, so 14 years now. Gawd.

Anyway, if you've never had any kind of bikini wax before then I'd definitely recommend starting with a Californian or Brazilian rather than going the whole hog straight out of the gate. It'll give you a better idea of where your pain threshold lies and just what to expect out of the whole experience.

Whether you're given a paper thong or expected to be completely naked from the waist down depends on the salon, but I'd be amazed at any half-decent waxer leaving your own underwear on. I'm not sure where your friend is going but that would be a bit of a red flag for me, tbh.

Also, some things that no-one will ever tell you about extended waxing for the first time (the sensitive amongst us should look away now):

    • You will look like a freshly-plucked goose for a couple of days afterwards. It's not remotely attractive but there's no getting away from it.
    • You'll probably get some whitehead spots in the area too the very first time. Doesn't matter how brilliant the waxer is (I started in Urban Wax); it's just a natural consequence of what really amounts to quite a lot of trauma to your pores.
    • You'll wee all over yourself whenever you go to the bathroom for the first while. Seriously, this should be the first thing the salon warns everyone about, but it's never mentioned. Waaaaaay too much information here, but you'll never realise how much of a "funnel" your hair acts as until it's no longer there.
Anyway, best of luck. Ring a couple of salons and ask LOADS of questions. The first time is by far the worst. After a couple of sessions you'll barely even feel it anymore.

Actually most specialised salons don't have any issue waxing while you have your period as long as you're clean, fresh and wearing a tampon. But a lot of women just prefer to wait til they're done, which is fair enough.

Really? I've been waxing for years too but never had any of those issues?

I have a very low pain threshold, and while it just is painful, quite painful in parts, it is bearable. I started off with a full Hollywood wax. Ideally you should start with a regular bikini wax, just so you can see what it's like. I make sure to take two painkillers about 30 minutes before.

As per my thread here, I've been going to <SNIP> for a good while now and want to change as they burnt me, and are double dipping. So I wouldn't recommend them.

It's something that once you start you'll really want to continue. I really like being bare, as it feels cleaner and sexier.

It is painful, but as someone who is quite sensitive, even I can do it, and get over it by the time you're walking out the front door. I'd recommend getting a maintenance wax also, getting it done every 5 weeks, as this is much less painful and quicker.

Really? I sure as hell go red and mottled for a day or two after a wax.

I don't recall whiteheads, but ingrown hairs are my issue. Exfoliating is very important, OP, but not for the first couple of days when your skin is raw!

Also, while we're sharing things that people don't tell you, a friend of mine got waxed for the first time and experienced a period leak a couple of weeks later. Pubic hair helps to catch your flow if needed. Without any hair there, you don't have that line of defence so particularly if you use pads, check more often if they need changing.

Go the week after your period if possible, because that's apparently when you're least sensitive. And take painkillers 30 minutes beforehand. I'm not sure if the pain is that bad or if it's the anticipation of pain!

My skin looks red for a few hours after waxing but it looks perfectly fine the day after. I have experienced ingrown hairs but I have never noticed anything different about peeing. I think everybody is different, everyone has different skin and anatomy and we all react in different ways so it's hard to give a definitive "this is what will happen" answer.
