Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hey.

I was trying to burn some .avi videos from my laptop to blank dvds using nero 9 but couldn't get it to work. I'm a bit of a tech dummy so maybe I'm doing something really stupid. How should I be doing it?????

Are you trying to make a movie that you can watch in your DVD player, or do you just want to be able to use it on a computer?

Yes, to use in a dvd player. Does the .avi file have to be converted to some other file type first? If so any ideas on free conversion software?

Just an off the wall suggestion, would Handbrake be suitable for this, it is free, as in, free beer.

Yes it does, in order for it to work in a regular DVD player, it has to be encoded. There are a lot of programs that do it, but finding a free one that works can be a little hard.

I have used TMPGEnc ( http://www.tmpgenc.net/en/download.html ) before with good results and it is pretty straightforward, but it is not free. From their site, it looks like they offer a free 14 day demo though, so you might try this. Sometimes, the demos don't have all the features though.

Here is a guide that shows how to use it, if you do end up purchasing/downloading it http://www.doom9.org/mpg/tmpg-dvdauthor.htm

Otherwise, perhaps someone knows of a reliable free program to do this.

Edit: I am fairly certain that handbrake will not do what you need. I think handbrake is used to copy an existing DVD. I was actually looking at it yesterday, because it works with Linux...

Sorry, I forgot about WinFF, I have it installed as well, doh!

    WinFF http://www.biggmatt.com/winff/

It will convert just about anything to anything.. The above links to the software and forums.

Free, as in, free beer. No piracy required.

DVDCoach Express is excellent I find. Very easy to use. Just drag-and-drop the AVI onto the application and it converts and burns.

Another great one is Cucusoft Video converter.
Select your file, select the output format and hit convert when its done it will ask you if you want to burn the converted file to dvd hit yes job done.

If you have a decent system pref quad core 2+ GB of ram shouldn't take any longer than 15mins for a 700Mb Avi file conversion.
