Strangest thing you have seen running

I was running around Murphy's farm in Cork. Spotted a guy practicing with his samurai sword. Looked like a serious sword.

Just yesterday I was running by a popular fishing spot, heard a load of commotion and turned round to see what was going on. There was a bird caught on someones fishing hook, (accidentally of course!), not very nice to see but the bird managed to free itself somehow and took off again!!

Running along the wooden bridge in strong winds a few years ago, a quite large rook was blown off course and crashed into my head. That was quite odd.

Freaked me out the first time I stumbled across that going on when running along an otherwise quite country road. Happened again this year though despite me forgetting what weekend it was at the time again.

Ran past a guy wearing what I thought was a just a big hat during an early morning run in Central Park NYC.
As I got closer I noticed the hat looking at me!!!
Well not the hat, but the pet cat that was sitting on his cap! It had a collar, with the guy holding the lead in his hand. He was probably doing 9min/miles too:pac:

Could never figure out what impressed me most, the lunatic runners balance for keeping the cat on his head or the poor cat's balance for staying on its owners!

Last winter on the Carlow to Kilkenny road there was, dumped on the side of the road, a child car seat with a teddy bear strapped in it...

A collection of porn DVDs in verge of road. Or at least CDs with covers that were photocopies of porn film covers, didn't take them home, just dropped them into the car of a fellow we know who was in a pub down the road.

At dusk last night, as the light fell, and at about 9 miles into my long-run, saw a car with both driver's and back car door open - in the back two people wriggling under a blanket, and the driver fully dressed in the front seat ....

This was up behind Arthur's seat in Edinburgh at around 9:45pm, only people around were myself, another runner (very fast guy who'd passed me out) and another car of hoodied-guys further up the road. My own fault for not keeping better track of sunset times, I'll be more careful with that in the future.

The only other sighting is not a "strange thing" ... but last Easter Saturday I was delighted to see Fionnuala Britton pound her way past me near the start of the Wicklow Way round Marlay Park. Not officially 'while running' though, I was hiking that time.

I was doing a LSR a couple of months ago along the Boyne in Drogheda when I turned a corner and ran into a 100 odd strong Orange order and Apprentice boys parade. Not something you see everyday down south so I was pretty taken aback!

Today in the dlr 10k there was a woman in a summer dress and fancy top and a pair of asics running the race.
Also a man running the race with a buggy, creamed loads of people on the corners, then a woman about 6k in having a chat on her phone whilst running away,

Which bit,
The woman in the dress was around 55 years old and the buggy bit I nearly went head over heels and the phone, I was calling her a biatch for still being able to talk while running. :-) :-)

Saw a guy running the Rock & Roll HM today in a cotton shirt and denim knee-length shorts. Finished in about 1:30. Why would you do that to yourself?

Finished my run this morning on the board walk at Bachelor walk around 8:40. Stop my watch, had a nice smile to myself, happy another run done, suddenly I see a guy sitting down and using a syringe on his arm!!

I thought I was getting attacked by a bird one time running by a farmers field close to me. Caught something in the corner of my eye and I ducked. Turned out it was a bird shaped kite attached to a very long bendy pole, obviously used as a bird scarer. Never saw one like it before.

A few here may have seen this, but during the IMRA Bray race at the start of the summer, a couple of horses got spooked and joined the race right in the middle of the pack between Bray Head and the peak at the Greystones end. They rang along over taking people for a while before leaving again. It was funny to watch from behind, but at the same time a bit scary in case anyone got trampled.

Seeing an old homeless man pleasuring himself on a run one night at about 3am heading out the coast towards Bull Island, on way back he was sobbing uncontrollably. Poor man has passed on since, used to bump into quiet regularly running along that route in the early hours. He used to call me mad as i ran past.

Like average_ runner I work in the city centre, I work on eden quay and use the laneway at the back of the Abbey theatre to get in the back door of work, seeing users inject has become a normality to me, they know me at this stage and think I'm a nutter going running everyday.

I have seen some awful sights in that lane from prostitution, drug use, dealing, fights, robberies etc..

Was running along Amiens Street a few weeks ago. Wearing just a t-shirt, runners and a pair of shorts. Some junkie called out to me as if there was some emergency. When I slowed down she asked had I got a light. I was thinking: Seriously? What do you think?

Was that the wooden bridge over to Dollymount?

If it was I had a similar experience there during the Clontarf Half. A large crow/rook swooped down and dive boomed my head! I think it was freaked out by a the runners.

Seen a deer career into a group of runners ahead of me in the Phoenix Park - it was during the race series about 3 years ago - nobody seriously injured thankfully.

Closer to home seen a girl having a whizz into the river in Cavan town during the fleadh cheoil - when she seen me run past she stumbled backwards and fell in!!

Also had two girls in debs dresses (and appropriately high heels) decide it would be hilarious to run alongside me for a few yards when I was out on an early morning run - mildly amusing until one of them fell and I had to pick her up - she told me it was fault too :eek:.

Was running though a wood in France a few years back. Saw maybe one car on the run. Very remote place. I had a call of nature. Was listening to my ipod. did hear the deer that came to have a look. When I looked up I was about 6 inches from its face. We both got a huge fright. He ran off down the field trashing the grass with his anglers barking or whatever they do.

sister in-law did the liffey swim and got sick a few years back. I bet its full of them. I am actually feeling sick here thinking about it.

I was running towards Heuston Station a month or so ago and slowly began to realize something was going on in the Liffey...turns out a girl had fallen/jumped (? never did find out) in and was trying to get out, the water was only up to her knees. Ambulances, fire trucks and garda all came screeching up the road to the rescue. Girl made it out ok.

I think for me it was strange because I had run all the way to the bridge by Hueston, and half way back up the quay before I copped on to the drama!

Not really strange. Our peripheral vision decreases while we run. Body way in moving brain power and energy more towards our legs and what we need for the run. It does also explain why some people running can be seen as rude as they talk to you normally but just don't see you. We all get told "didn't you see me when you were running" and the answer is no. The brain sees some of what you see as irrelevant based on effort level you are going at.
