    I went for a look around a few garages today weighing up a new car purchase. Thing was that I was paranoid of being 'done' in each one - i think the sales guys took one look at the blond head and saw a sucker coming!

    Anyhow, spotted a '05 Toyota Avensis 1.6 -23,000 miles = E15,500. Main Toyota dealer so good rep, 1 years warrenty etc...

    My trade in is a '00 VW Golf 1.4, 95,000 miles, NCT well overdue, and feel it will need a good bit of money put into it to pass.

    Sales guy quoted E12,500 - so, E3,000 trade in for my 8 yr old Golf.

    So folks, is it a good, bad or indifferent deal?

    The 3k for the golf is quite good but you should be trying to beat the asking price down too

    Dealers cant get rid of stock between 03 - 05 so I would bargain hard.

    If its sitting on the forecourt then they want rid of it, so i would say your ready to do a deal at 14k and then finish at 14.5k.

    And its Blonde the last time I checked :D

    Personally I wouldnt touch the 1.6 Avensis the 1.8 would be a better car. I saw in the paper over the weekend a brand new 2008 1.6 avensis was going for roughly 23,000 with warrenty etc for next 3 years. Think I heard somewhere that Toyota ireland are mad to get rid of the 1.6 variant as the 1.8 is better on emissions and gives more or less the same MPG as well as the same road tax rate for 2008 cars. Consequently older 1.6 avensis will depreciate more rapidly with a brand new 1.6 version costing less.

    only caveat I'd add is.........02+ 1.6 Avensis can be an oil burner......make sure it's good, and get a written warranty on it.

    Currently one having a new engine next door to me, and despite it's an 03, Toyota are warranty-ing (??) a new replacement engine. A consequence, probably, of having too-small an engine for that size car, so it's thrashed a bit more than the 1.8 would.

    Smoking-gun Avensii not uncommon, btw.......

    Shop around, the Avensis is a popular car in Ireland, there are plenty of used ones for sale on garage forecourts.
