Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ryder Cup - Wildcard Picks

Mcginley naming his wildcard picks on September 2nd after the conclusion of the Italian Open on the European Tour and the Deutsche Bank Championship in the States.
Good article on bbc about who are the contenders.

    http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/golf/28926560

It appears McDowell will get a wildcard spot if Stephen Gallacher gets a top 2 spot in Italy this week.

McGinely has apparently said McDowell is guaranteed a wildcard spot if gallacher makes it.

I think Paul must bring in Poulter, i know if didn't have the greatest of seasons but he brings great qualities to the team and revels in the tournament.

Presuming Gallacher doesn't make 1st or 2nd spot, who would you bring in?

    my 3:

    Pouler
    Lowry
    Molinary Francesco

    I would go with
Gallagher/Mc Dowell- I would pick whoever doesn't automatically qualify
    Poulter
    Donald

    poulter donald gallagher

I dont see how he can pick anyone else

Sky commentators were really talking up Molinari today for a pick. I can't see that happening.

I think mark roe was only doing that because he coaches him

So Denis Pugh is his long game coach and Mark Roe his short game coach! No wonder sky love him.

What if Gallagher doesn't make an automatic pick? He may not get a wild card.
Poulter is nailed on for one, if Luke and Molinari both have good weeks its going to be a very tough decision.

  • Registered Users Posts: 420 ✭✭Jazzzman

I wouldn't be massively surprised if Westwood got a W/C over Donald.

Donald is massively off the boil whereas Lee is finding form.

On the other hand I wouldn't be surprised if Paul plays it safe with Poults/Lee/Luke either.

Would love to see a Scotsman there and Gallacher for me would take it ahead of Lawrie.

I wouldn't have Donald near it either. Poulter for his form and fan's response to him needs to be picked also.

Yes Lowry, ok, im being a little biased.
He has had a good season though and experience will be brilliant for him

Wouldn't mind seeing Bernd wiesberger picked after two great rounds

    Westwood
    Poulter
    Gallagher

Can't see Donald making it as he's not long enough to play fourball

Gallagher is sneaky long and I think he and Westwood will give Mc Ginley more options

    Poulter is nailed on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,076 ✭✭✭✭vienne86

Gallacher must be in with a shout now.

He was in with more than a shout anyway. Apart from being a rookie he ticks most of the boxes. Next in line, playing consistently well, good temperament, good record at Gleneagles (and knows it inside out.) I'd say he has it, barring something sensational. Donald and Poulter the others.

I'm not sure if you're too familiar with the Ryder Cup but there are other formats other than fourball.

    Luke Donald Foursomes record

    6-2-0 ( 6 wins, 2 losses ) - It's not all about length

    Luke Donald Fourball record

    1-1-1 ( 1 win, 1 loss, 1 half ) - not bad for someone who isn't long enough

    Luke Donald Singles record

    3-1-0 ( 3 wins, 1 loss ) 3 wins.... Again, not bad for a short guy

One last thing about the distance issue.

Last time out, Donald vs Bubba in the singles 2012 Ryder Cup

Luke Donald beat Bubba Watson 2 & 1

    Distance isn't much of a problem :D

    Or a tall guy either

Just can't see him being picked this time
    Only my guess

Surely he cant not pick Donald ? He is the next man on the list.
Least of all for Westwood. Who has the lowest claim on both form and rankings of Donald, Jimenez, Molinari, and Gallacher. Poulter we know is in. GMac also in if Gallacher makes it on Sunday. Of the 3, or 4, Donald has the best claim, and the first 3 have a clear advantage of experience over Gallacher which will mean only qualifying by right will have him there.

Poulter, Donald and Molinari (or Poulter, Donald, GMac if it comes to that) are the right picks. I dont have McGinley's number, but if someone has it, can they please call to let him know the above so that he doesnt make a mistake. Picking Westwood could be a fatal one.

Donald, Gallacher and Poulter are the next three and the right three for a variety of reasons. Easy call for McGinley.

    I'd say it will be

    GMac/Gallacher
    Poulter
    Donald

I wouldn't think Westwood is in it at all.

Would have no problem with Wiesberger getting one of the picks, let's see how he gets on today.

    McDowell / Gallagher
    Poulter
    Wiesberger

This is great stuff from Gallacher, just like Donaldson last week he's rising to the challenge when needed. Needs to finish it off though, I wonder if McGinley will still consider him if he finishes just outside tied 2nd.

They're not European so have no chance. It would be a real crowd pleaser if McGinley selected that Irish trio.

I don't see why not. McGinley would quickly make himself very popular with those wildcards.

For putting a Harrington who's in the worst form of his life and Lowry, who is quite a bit behind the other guys deserving of a place there? No it wouldn't.

When Monty picked an out of form Harrington for Wales there was a lot of debate, and it proved to be a poor choice as he was very poor. This would be even worse.

Jazuz, I'm a big Lowry and Paddy fan but that's just a joke to even mention their names, Paddy is on a constant downward path and Paul will be picking those on an upward form, if Lowry really wanted to make a move for the RC then he should have been out almost every week over the last few months trying to impress instead of an extended break.

Looks like two of Luke, Westy and Poulter, simple as

Between Harrington, McDowell & Lowry 4 Majors and they're Celts with the Ryder Cup in Scotland. What's not to like.

Harrington has shown nothing all year and I think it has come to soon for Lowry , give him another 2 years and I think he might make it on his own merit so idhave to disagree with you totally
