Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone watch the Madrid vs Espanyol game? Some excellent attacking moves from both sides, Raul was fantastic in the first half! The game ended 2-2!
Yup, Raul was pretty impressive alright. Thought Pepe was sh*te though, really don't see why they paid a billion euro or something stupid like that for him.

It's not that he's shíte, just really inconsistent. No doubting that Madrid paid over the odds for him though but that's usually the case with defenders of his type (Ferdinand, Carvalho etc). Not saying he's anywhere near their standard but he could be in the next couple of years.

Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Cannavaro...I wouldn't want any of them near a defence

Am I alone in thinking Sergio Ramos is an absolutely fantastic player?

Not sure if you were being sarcastic or not but to link these two is mental. IMO of course. For a young player, it's frightening how good Ramos already is (85% of the time anyway).

I dont rate Pepe as highly tbh.

Sergio Ramos is a very talented player. Strong, very athletic and a great footballing brain. He can be 'suspect' at times defending, but he is still young. He will be one of the top defensive players in the next few years.

@ dfx- you wouldn't want Cannavaro near your defence??? The mind boggles

Saw the majority of the Barca - Atletico game on saturday... What a match that was. Barca were immense. I think that was the only way to describe them.

Hopefully they are back to their best!

Ramos is - when I've seen him - athletic alright and strong, but is quick to go to ground (in both boxes) and his defensive decision making and positioning hasn't been terrific. So defensively big questions which I admit were bigger when he first came in remain for me. I'd agree 'suspect' is about right..a defender suspect at defending..

Cannavaro on his Real performances is nowhere near what he should be for his experience and previous displays. I thought he might be the one to solidify their defence, but I think bad habits have set in, too many fouls and Casillas is saving them as much as ever.

I agree with most of this - but I think he's made enough progress in the last 2 years or so that his positioning and decision-making are now right most of the time. He definitely still has lapses, but as I said I reckon he's 85%ish and for a player so young in such a shockingly-organised defence, that's pretty good.

I agree - two seasons at Real now and he's been nowhere near his Juve form, let alone his WC 06 form (where, in fairness, he over-achieved). I thought he might organise the defence and give them a bit of shape but he hasn't been able to - all his best work at Real is desperate last-ditch recovery stuff.
