If a married couple is jointly assessed and one of them is unemployed do they get the benefit of the other persons PRSI contributions for the purpose of applying for the dole?

If not I presume they have to pay a certain amount in contributions to be eligible to claim JSA or JSB? Does anyone know how this is calculated? Seems odd that you would have to pay them first to be allowed to claim.

You can only claim with your own prsi contributions.

So in the case of a married couple where one spouse stays at home the non-working spouse is not entitled to claim JSA, JSB or illness benefit if they subsequently seperate?

The non-working spouse probably would not have an entitlement to JSB or Illness Benefit as they may not have enough contributions and not enough in the qualifying period. The non-working spouse can apply for jobseekers allowance which is means tested. If there are children involved and they live with the non-working spouse then the non-working spouse can apply for One Parent Family.
