Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi folks!

This is my first time building a computer from the ground up.
I upgraded the PSU and graphics card about a year ago, but I think the rest of the system is now too old to keep up.
My brother came up with this build: pcpartpicker[dot]com/p/WRb499 (including the PSU (actually mine is a GS700 but that wasn't an option) and GPU I already have).
Said brother is much more into competitive gaming than I am, so he wants me to buy the BenQ monitor with the 144Hz refresh rate and he'll trade me his Achieva Shimian 1440p.

Let me know what you guys think!
Particular points I'd like opinions on:
What should I do about cooling? How many fans should I install in the case, and how can I keep noise levels down?
What are the best places to buy the components from? Komplett, Scan, Amazon.co.uk?
Am I making the best use of my budget?
Will my GTX 560 Ti be sufficient to run games at 1440p with at least 30 FPS? It has 1 GB of vRAM. If not, what should I upgrade to?

    Questions
    1. What is your budget? €1,500
    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming (generally non-competitive)
    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes, Windows 7 64-bit
    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? I have a Nvidia GTX 560 Ti which I plan to use in the new build. May upgrade in future. Also have a Corsair GS700 PSU.
    5. Do you need a monitor? Not exactly; going to trade.
    6. Do you need any peripherals? None
    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Would prefer to get it all working first.
    8. How can you pay? Debit Card
    9. When are you purchasing? The next week or so.

    Thanks for your help!

Your 560 would be very underpowered at 1440, my 280x struggles to get 60+ fps on bf4 on ultra during hectic moments at 1440. No point building around it tbh. For your budget look at a top of the range 970 or 980. You could perhaps go with 2 tri-x 290s (their prices have been cut hugely of late) and even look at making the step up to a 4k monitor.

Also that monitor is a bit of an old model, I think your bro is being a bit cheeky asking you to buy a new €500 monitor as a swap for it. Newer models would be better than it, maybe look to get a gsync monitor (providing you go with an nvidia gpu) once a few more come on the market and you've more of a choice. I've an asus pb278q and am thinking of getting a second one. There's also plenty of posters here who've gotten Korean monitors online in this thread:

    Thanks for your help yimrsg!

I'm inclined to agree with you, but I'm reluctant to go much higher than €1,500 at least for now.
How would you build around a 970?
