Have a look at irish jobs for salaries.
Don't get into it for the money. Its a passion and you are always studying.

    Why would you change careers?

Career prospects would be good. At the moment there is a shortage of software developers with experience. The chances are that if you do it in college, you'll have been offered a job before you leave.

People change careers because they thought it would be easy and a way to earn money.

Don't do it for the money. As mentioned, if you have a passion for it, by all means do. If you're not sure you could try teaching yourself some basic software development to see hoe you find it.

You could go into other branches of IT, for example supporting/maintaining systems etc if software development is not your thing.
