Dog poisoning 2 milegate Killaloe

    Just letting dog walkers know that there's been a few cases of poisoning in that area, looks like someone laying poison maliciously. Treaty vets have confirmed 2 more cases.

    There were a couple of suspected cases of poisoning in Clonlara/O'Briensbridge about a month ago.

    It's disgraceful. Why would anyone do this maliciously. I walk my dog up there a lot, as do many people and as far as I've ever seen all the dog owners are very responsible. If someone doesn't want our dogs up there, please put up signs and tell us this, don't poison our dogs.

    To the best of my knowledge this poisoning occurred up on Ballycuggaran and not across the way at two mile gate.

    would it be someone targeting vermin like mink or the like??

    It is, but people do differentiate between the two places. Two-mile-gate generally refers to the lake and green area, and Ballycuggaran to the hill on the other side of the road. And I just thought that given the seriousness of the issue people should be aware of where the poisoning has taken place.

    It seems a bit drastic to use poison to use on mink etc. especially in such a public area.

    Just to be 100% clear

    As Taceom said, the poisonings at the weekend happened up in Ballycuggran Wood. That is the forestry area across the road from the two Mile Gate. The two mile gate is referred to on Signage etc as "Ballycugguran Beach" although it was always know locally as the Two Mile Gate.

    But the poisoning happened across the road in the forest walk.

    6 dogs poisoned around clonlara recently.all dead by the time they got to the vet.plus the ones at o brians bridge,and more in killaloe.some nutter out spreading strychnine along the walking routes.dogs on leads if you're walking in this area...

    Leaving out poison is something that belong in some Dickensian time and is only practiced by people who should have died out two centuries ago. It is akin to putting glue on tree branches to catch birds and euthanising animals via shotgun.
    Practiced widely in Europe until the 1940's and to this day in Nairobi, Congo, Liberia, Afghanistan and, of course, Ireland.
    It is of course illegal in Europe to engage in anything as idiotic, barbaric and backwards for many, many years, but for some reason "ah shure, 'tis grand" in ireland.
    It is the reason that we can't have nice things:

    Probably not,if they're prepared to drive from clonlara,to o Brian's bridge,then killaloe.if you don't know the area,then that's 10 or 15 miles.plus the poisoned tennis balls around UL .can't imagine anyone leaving a poisoned ball out for a mink.this is targeted to dogs,along popular walking routes.strychnine is banned for many years,so imagine this us the work if one person,rather than several guarding against mink.

    Your link is out of date as regards the current restrictions on the use of poison baits. Since that time all meat based poison baits have been banned and the use of poison is now illegal in all circumstances other than for the control of rodents indoors or using pet proof bait boxes as per the terms of rodenticide PCS licences.

    In that case I am glad it changed. Now convincing people not to do it is going to be the real challenge.
