Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It looks really good, but I don't see how they're going to tackle the deficit there. What would you chop?

Very impressive, if it can all be done.

The defence one is especially interesting
Maintain nuclear deterrent, but scrutinise renewal of Trident for value for money. Cut Ministry of Defence costs by at least a quarter. Ensure service personnel get more rest and provide support for ex-personnel to go to university. More support for veterans' mental health needs. Review of rules on awarding medals.

Sounds like a lot more to be done with a considerable amount less.

The defence one is especially interesting...

UK Defence posture and doctrine needs a fundamental re-think if the UK govt either wants to save money or actually do any of the things it wants to be able to do.

currently, the financial situation within the defence budget means that when one service has a continuing operation, the other services get put on hold - as an example, the Army is a full whack in Helmand, so most of the RN is tied up at Portsmouth and the RAF is reduced to critical operations only. the new government needs to undertake a complete, fully thought out review of Overseas and Defence Policy and to decide what capabilities it wants and what it can live without, and has to make those decisions knowing that the choices it makes are only reversable in a decade-long or even generational context.

sadly, the only thing you get with less, is less.

Introduce a Freedom Bill. Scrap ID cards, the National Identity register and the ContactPoint database, and halt the next generation of biometric passports. Outlaw finger-printing of children at school without parental permission. Extend scope of Freedom of Information Act. More protections for DNA database. Protect trial by jury and restore rights to non-violent protest. Review libel laws to protect freedom of speech. Safeguards against misuse of anti-terrorism legislation. Regulate CCTV. Mechanism to prevent the proliferation of "unnecessary" new criminal offences. Establish commission to look at creating British Bill of Rights, incorporating and building on obligations under European Convention on Human Rights.

    All good.

Liking what I am reading so far.

I think it is pretty good actually.
Broadly agree with the proposals although I'm not so sure how it will turn out in some specific areas e.g. Lib-Dems opposing Nuclear power despite being part of a government which is actively building more Nuclear power stations and yesterday Nick Clegg has criticised the UK Bill of Rights which he sees as too restrictive in favour of the Human Rights act which the Tories favour. Not to be too gloomy on the prospects for the new coalition (I actually think its good if it can hold together) but it will be an enormous challenge to see it through.
