First Proper Motor

22, full license <1 year. Looking for suggestions as regards a motor.

Im looking for something with a bit of poke, prefferably year 2000 onwards, and a bit of space for carrying surfboards and the like. I live in the countryside so thats part of the reason Im looking for a bit of a bus, but still managable tax and insurace, so no gas merchants.

Im currently looking at a 2001 Renault Laguna 1.6 Super Sport for e5950. Insurance is e1500 fully comp. Now good ol' Banko de Irlande have offered me an attractive loan of 13k, but I personally would rather max at 10k inlc insurance of 1-2k so car can be max e8500.

All suggestions welcome, cheers.

Meant to say by first proper car, I learnt in a 2001 Astra 1.4 and have driven that for about a year, its my mums.

If you do go for a Laguna, €6k for a 2001 model is robbery.

Why pay €6k for a 2001 Laguna when you can get a 2003 for €1500 more:

P.S. 1.6 litre engines in cars of this size don't have alot of poke in them, you would want to be looking for a 1.8 litre at least.

if it where me at that age... id be looking for a 172 clio or such a car, practical , nippy and insurable... have you though of going to england cand getting a car there?? you can get some cars rather cheap there as apposed to our " banana republic "

Big fan of estate, possibly in the soccer mom vogue

I wouldnt be too pushed about having buckets of litre space in the boots just aslong as i can get the boards on top of me motor! The initial intrest in the Laguna II was looks wise and now Ive heard alot of bad things as regards electrics, the turbo in the diesel blowing and so on. Im not especially keen on Toyotas or Fords, maybe its just theyre a shade anonimous? I wouldn't be adverse to paying slightly over the odds for a German bus.

The insurance shouldn't be too bad considering you've a full licence. Quinn's quote surprised me so much I'm looking at a whole different league of car than I was a week ago.

Maybe I just want anguish pain and expensive services, but Ive spotted an Alfa 156 2.4 JTD, now I know Alfa Romeos can be hit and miss but Ive heard that diesel is pretty solid.

I'd have that. Where in Cork are you. I know a good Alfa mechanic in Cloyne if that's anywhere nearby.

too old - 02 and 03 Stilo's are... poor. They redid much of the internals in 04, and even got the car re-NCAP'ed as if it was a new vehicle despite identical bodywork.

Nice car with anything other than the base engine but the reliability of those early models is abysmal; very comfortable even for lanky feckers like myself to drive...

That "asking" price is very optimystic by the seller imo for that year and mileage even if it had a full ARSH.

The VAG 1.8 20VT engine, 150-180BHP is relatively cheap to insure. It can be found in Golfs, A3s, Leons, A4, Passats etc. It has a good bit of poke and very reliable. You see alot of these cars get to 120/150K miles on original turbo.
