Top Coat for over my wedding suit (Winter wedding)

Hi All,

Just looking for some suggestions on a smart topcoat for a suit.

I am getting early. I have my suit sorted and am toying with the idea of getting myself a nice topcoat in case the day is cold/bad. Nothing worse than standing around outside the church or wherever in just a suit freezing.

So far I have a lovely suit from Louis Copeland. Its navy, but not business navy, can't really explain. Possibly cobalt?
I have a lovely pashmina/scarf thingy that Mother in law got me last week in Thailand.

I am thinkg a full length (to the knees??) is better than below the pocket length?
I am 6ft1" so I think I can carry a long jacket.

Anyway, having never bought one of these items before, all suggestions are warmly welcomed.
Ideas on style, fabric, colour, where to buy it etc all needed.

A long trench coat would look really good. I was at a winter wedding before and the groom looked bloody fantastic with a long, dark trench coat. Wool is the best fabric (don't even think about leather!) as it looks classy and will keep you toasty warm. You can leave the top buttons open so display your scarf or buy one with an open collar. Personally, I would go for a dark colour as your suit is dark and it is a winter wedding and you could wear it with or without the belt depending on what you prefer. Most styles go just below the bum/mid thigh but a full length one would be fine as you are quite tall.

Where to buy depends on your budget - most designers have very classic cut trench coats for men but I have seen them in M&S this year so you could try there.

Maybe I'm old fashioned but my initial thought was a Crombie? You'd have it forever and it'd be very warm.

I don't like trench or overly fitted coats with suits. For a wedding or any formal occasion a classic non fitted coat is much better. Every designer has them but the can be expensive. Even the cheaper ones are not cheap, but they are a clothing item where quality is really important. And you can wear them for years.

I prefer this type alright. Does the trench coat look at bit office workwear or is it just me?
