Can someone explain to me the procedure that takes place when you type an address, for example http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/faq.php, into the address bar in firefox/ie. How ow does the browser know how to find the ip address from the url and then find the specific page that has been requested at the ip address?

I have a kind of general understanding of the process but I'd like to know what happens step by step.

Try doing a traceroute on the website, and you can see the route it takes.

start -> run -> cmd
tracert www.boards.ie

That's not really what I'm looking for. I'm trying to understand how it works, how typing some text in a browser gets resolved into taking you to a certain page on a certain server somewhere in the world.
