This was achieved by taking cells from his olfactory system (cells which have a particular ability to repair damaged nerves), and growing them in a lab until the culture was enough to do their work on the spine. Then nerve fibres were taken from his ankle and implanted into the damaged area of the spine, to act as support for the olfactory cells to do their work.
