Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can anyone tell me what the PDA AND CSC Versions are for?

Example in the Three Ireland 5.1.1 Download
    PDA N910FXXU1COH4
    CSC N910F3IE1COH3

I think its something to do with carrier and modem version, but i want a more clear answer like if you could interfere with your connection to your carrier if you don't use the right information, and by interfere i mean anything from not receiving a signal to slowing down your connection or that

    TIA

    Dpjmie

    The CSC denotes carrier
N910F3IE1COH3 - 3IE is the carrier (and N910F is the model)
When you've flashed, you should check the CSC in the boot screen to make sure it has updated - you might need a factory reset to get it to update: what you see in the boot screen is the source of OTA updates (so if it has not changed, any OTA updates will come from your old CSC provider in future (I'm on BTU [UK] for example, even though I flashed Germany Unbranded to get 5.0.1 early, but I still prefer my updates to come from UK if possible (if they ever come out first with stock unbranded! That, and I don't fancy a reset...). Originally my handset was vodafone IE (VFG), back when I bought it, with KitKat. I've had no issues with my phone, not when changing from Vodafone branded, to UK unbranded, or Germany unbranded. I'm running on Three network just FYI.

How's the battery on 5.1.1? Mine is atrocious on 5.0

Just got 5.1.1 update on 3 ireland. The phone heated up so much immediately after the install, I had to remove the battery to let it cool down.

    Stupid question.
My Note 4 (Three branded) is currently rooted with TWRP installed.
Should I be able to use TWRP to flash the Three firmware from the sammobile site instead of Odin?

Just updated Three Note 4 to 5.1.1 all fine so far.
I have moved Skype App to the SD Card (143 MB) which was not possible in previous version.

Same for me as well big improvement as well. I am still on 30% and I have used my phone quite a bit today and was streaming music from spotty as well.

Going to give it another few days and see.

I never really take much notice of my battery life as always top it up at desk in work, the fast charging is the best thing ever!
Must keep an eye on it tomorrow.

Facebook app was crashing on me a lot too, especially when I tried to play video, and that appears to have stopped.

Weird..my screen lock (pattern) is set but not working. ie: even though it's set up and was working yesterday it has stopped working today, and according to the settings it is still active. This is not good.
    Edit

The screen unlocking may be related to my parrot blue tooth car kit because when I disconnected the screen lock became functional.

I'm still running BOC 5.01 on mine but I find battery life and general performance is really poor in the last few months... or is it just me?

I'm trying to work up the enthusiasm to go through reinstalling everything after a reflash again (:() but would people recommend 5.1.1 or should I just roll back to 4.4.4?
I'm pretty "meh" on the "improvements" 5.x offered anyway so don't care either way.. all I want is that the apps I use work and the phone is responsive and the battery lasts preferably all day.

    Any advice? :)

Go to 5.1.1 my note 4 is running so much better since then i would say update it better battery life and no lag anymore with stuff.

On Meteor, can I use any of the firmwares on sammobile instead of waiting months for Meteor?

Go to 5.1.1 my note 4 is running so much better since then i would say update it better battery life and no lag anymore with stuff.

So I downloaded the VF 5.1.1 image from the above link and used ODIN 3.10 to install.. works away through it but fails at the very end saying the partition size is too big?
exact error is: "Volume size is too big 81920 <204800 ODIN: Invalid ext4 image"

Also happens with the 3IE 5.1.1 image

Reboot then prompts to use Kies to recover the phone which thankfully does work, but leaves me back with the O2 5.01 image

    Any ideas?

EDIT: Found this... http://www.droidviews.com/fix-invalid-ext4-image-error-in-odin-while-installing-firmware-on-samsung-devices/ ... trying now!

    EDIT 2: Success! :D

EDIT 3: Err sort of! That's not English! :p Let's try that again

EDIT 4: Ahh that's better! Must have been the PIT file repairing the partition structure as on another go with just the VF image it now seems fine.. finally! But hopefully this might be useful to someone else :)

What have people used to root after going to 5.1.1? I tried CF-autoroot as I have previously (just run it via Odin) but it caused a boot loop.

Not my weekend with Android apparently lol..

With 5.1.1, Samsung have locked down root at the kernel level so none of the autoroot methods will work. You basically need to flash a modified kernel that allows root and then try to root.

I haven't tried this method yet. If you don't understand what they're talking about here, I'd suggest avoiding it:

Im just wondering if its normal for the about phone to list the phone number as unknown, i have installed the stock firmware on 5.1.1. Can someone check who is on the three firmware, or any other for that matter is it normal, or is it the fact I've changed to stock??

My number is showing up, although it is the 'sim card's' number and not my actual number.

The update itself is extremely smooth. Got the German unbranded update ota today and find the phone much snappier and more responsive. When I bought the phone it was on 5.0.1 and I found it sluggish compared to my note 3 even. It rips along now though. Can't comment on battery yet

You could try Adverts.ie but they aren't a cheap phone as you no doubt know. I hope you got the stolen Note 4 blacklisted.

Are there any beginners guides to rooting a Note 4? Im on 5.1.1 and the model number is SM-N910F.

I found this guide but it's a year old: http://androidxda.com/root-samsung-galaxy-note-4-sm-n910f

Is there anything of a similar writeup thats more recent? Or are there any steps I should change in the above?

I'm afraid you've picked a bad time to learn how to root a note 4. The 5.1 update brought changes to make it much harder. The steps in the link you posted won't work. Take a look at my post from above. If you're new to rooting you shouldn't try it. I haven't bothered myself.

Easy to flash it via Odin. Longest part of the whole thing is there downloading. 5.1 has made a world of difference to the phone.

BTU was one of the most recent (i.e. slowest!) to update to 5.1.1. I flashed to BTU (UK stock unbranded) from VDI (vodafone ireland) last year (to get rid of branding and bloatware) and got so sick of waiting for the OTA 5.1.1 update that I recently reflashed to DBT (Germany unbranded stock). They seem to be among the first unbranded stock to update in general (Vodafone was the quickest overall)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

I'm on the DBT too, anytime I've flashed it myself I've used the German one.

Only issue is you won't get OTA updates with the German one but its so easy to flash it that it makes no real odds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,417 ✭✭✭griffdaddy

You will get OTA updates with the German one. I have a simfree Note 4 from Amazon Germany on DBT and received two OTA updates in the last month. The important thing is that when you flash the DBT firmware for the first time (coming from branded network or BTU) that you do a factory reset after the flash so that your CSC changes to the German one. If you don't do this your 'consumer code' remains the same as it was before and the firmware changes to German and confuses the OTA process.

Yep, exactly what I did, and I got my second OTA update almost right away after flashing the original 5.1.1 DBT stock ROM, while the UK one was still lagging behind... No difference in actual software, but I'm sticking to the German one for the faster updates. UK is just too slow...

Anyone know where I could pick one of these up cheap enough. Most places still looking at €500+. I thought it would have dropped a decendecent bit in price by now

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,678 ✭✭✭TrustedApple

Ebay would be your best bet to try and pick a new one up fairly cheap seen them there for about 440.

But they even hold there valve for a 2nd hand one I got 400 euros for my sim free one there last week crazy money to be paying for a year old 2nd hand phone.

Changed over to S6 edge plus and to be fair I don't miss the s pen at all as I maybe used it 20 times over a year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,603 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

Seen it in carphone warehouse for 625 I think. I was expecting a bit of a price drop considering its out over a year. I've an s4 at the moment and just thinking about making the move for a bigger screen and I think the pen will come in handy. I'll check eBay anyway thanks

I just got it too. The last 5.1.1 update made a massive difference to my battery life (after turning off background data on Google Play Services and a few others also), I'm getting close on 2 days use out of a single charge!! I'm not playing heavy games (Threes, etc I'm doing plenty, but nothing resource-intensive), but I am checking mail, using Viber/WhatsApp/messages and phone functions. I'm on wifi most of the time and use Llama to turn off the wifi when out of range (saves battery on searching for wifi networks), but that's all pretty standard stuff, so highly impressed already. If this latest one delivers on the promise of even better battery life, happy days indeed!!!

Amazon is selling genuine Fast Chargers at last - I picked up a spare not so long ago to keep at work and to take travelling, and it's identical to the one I got with the phone: fast charger, genuine Samsung, the whole deal.
