converting gas fire to stove

Have a gas fire but want to get a stove insert. House is 2 story timber frame. Had a look in the attic and there is a metal flue coming out of the wall and goes up to the roof. No chimney. Do I need to get a chimney built? Its a semi d but fireplace backs onto connecting wall of other house. Is it possible or and any idea…
