Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

TXFM (formerly much missed Phantom) line up

TXFM, just like in its previous guise as Phantom, has to grapple with a few issues.

It has to be sufficiently different from the other stations to make it worthwhile for the listener interested in alternative or indie to tune in. At the same time, it cannot be too obscure during the daytime because it is a very small niche market and it does not want to lose listeners that want their diet of alternative music to be palatable to the ears. So how do you bridge the gap? What we are talking about, during the daytime at least, is accessible music that is rarely if ever heard on other radio stations. I think this is the key.

Another point of difference I believe should be the attitude of the presenters. They should be first and foremost about the music and not into inane chat - there's plenty of that elsewhere. By all means have music-related competitions, as indeed the station does already. In fact, I think most of the presenters are passionate about their music. This will be become even more apparent if the musical content paragraph above is addressed.

Perhaps another important tool is advertising or marketing the station. I would have thought that anywhere or anything associated with the kind of music that TXFM plays would be ideal, for example music publications, music venues and so on. The trick is to give the station name recognition, an identifiable product brand and, last but not least, a "cool" image - the "goto" station for your diet of alternative music. This is a tough one I know - there are so many other non-traditional ways of getting that music.

There is also the question of who the target market is. Is TXFM interested in students, young adults or people of all ages with a healthy interest in alternative rock? This could have a major baring on the music mix too.

All of these issues (and maybe a few others I forgot about!) could make a difference to the listeners it gets and, following from that, what advertisers are interested.

Anyway, how the feck was 'Rattlesnakes' by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions today's sneer or cheer? The song is a damn classic.

I could not believe that song was on cheer or sneer. It was picked as if nobody had ever heard of it! Really odd choice.

There is also the question of who the target market is.

I have tried to work this one out myself several times. Judging from info in texts sent in to various shows, there seems to be a lot of listeners in my demographic - mid to late 30s. I am not sure if we are the target audience or not, but we do seem to be a key component of it.
(Which I think is why Rattlesnakes got such an overwhelming 'Oh FFS, of course it's a cheer' reaction today! It would have been a staple go-to song of my youth, personally)

well that's a nice thought, except for the fact that this "accessible" music which has got more and more prevalent over the last few years, has seen them lose sh1tloads of listeners.

it's complete nonsense that people will leave if they don't play Kodaline or Adele or Hozier and play something slightly more obscure instead.
those people don't listen to TXFM in the first place.

if something isn't working, stop doing it, don't double-down.

What I am suggesting is music that is not played elsewhere - music that has an edge but is still accessible. It is a tricky concept - that does not mean a non-stop diet of Kodaline, Adele, Hozier et al. You have reminded me of another component, which is missing during daytime in particular: a wide selection of songs in the mix, rather than playing the same relatively small number all the time.

I have to be honest and say that I've never heard Adele played on TXFM, and I do tune in a lot...maybe I've just been lucky! Adele would actually make me switch off. I listen to TXFM so that I don't have to listen to the likes of Adele.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

not since it's become TXFM, no, as she hasn't released anything recently.
in the Phantom days, Rolling in the Deep was probably played every 2nd hour for about a month when it came out. Someone Like You also got plenty of spins.

probably not as bad as Regina Spektor's "All The Rowboats" hourly outing for what seemed like 6 months, but not far off.

Ah. I do remember Phantom's obsession with All The Rowboats (which didn't bother me) but thankfully I missed the Adele thing. Or maybe I've blocked it out!

The constant playing of that Of Monsters And Men Song and 'Tongue Tied' by Grouplove (Coca Cola ad song) is beginning to get on my wick.

Delorentos - 'Show Me Love' is their latest 'played to death' song, IMO. At least it's a recent release though. 'Tongue Tied' was released in 2011!

And Noel Gallagher's 'In the Heat of the Moment'. Might aswell just play a classic oasis song instead.

That song is complete and utter ass. Rushes to a chorus before it's even begun and the lyrics are repetitive as hell. How many times do they sing the title of the song??

[EDIT]Was just thinking, Sun Kil Moon have announced a gig here and I was wondering have TXFM ever played anything by them or Mark Kozelek? That's the kinda stuff they need to have on

    More dead air.

Have changed stations, might stick it on again in the morning.

  • Registered Users Posts: 128 ✭✭Liam92

Huge amount of dead air early this morning around 5am (I work early shifts), and the reception was dreadful when it wasn't dead air.

Also, serious amount of musical muck they're playing at the moment. That Weezer track is awful, the St Motel one they're always playing, the list goes on.

Final rant, but they really need to update their playlist on a weekly or fortnightly basis, like BBC Radio 1 or 6 Music. How long do we have to hear Jenny Lewis or the majority of the tunes they have been constantly playing since the year zero?

(PS: Ray Lamontagne's Supernova still gets airtime, ughhh)

Could anyone tell me what the tune is in the TXFM jingle? Driving me mad trying to figure it out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

    which one?
they were using "Caribou - Can Do Without You" for a while during the summer and on the rare occasions i'd tune in, i'd think "oh great, Caribou!" but then the TXFM voiceover would come on

  • Registered Users Posts: 174 ✭✭lordstilton

So much dead air today. What the hell is going on???

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,467 ✭✭✭Oasis_Dublin

It's an actual joke at this stage. Have they got interns producing, or running the sound desk? Imagine prospective advertisers with TX FM? They'd surely want nothing to do with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,357 ✭✭✭✭Birneybau

I'm gone to Today FM, don't think Denis is giving the TXFM crowd enough change for the meter.

I'll check in again for Cathal tomorrow but it happens again, I change again.

Again, I thought it was just me having issues, but I really should know better if this thread is anything to go by. Off to Spotify for the rest of the day, methinks!

Can we start a pool on where the closure of TXFM will be announced? I reckon February

I just turned it on there and Joe was in the middle of talking to Claire. Ten seconds in, the air went dead for a few seconds. Jayziz.

And again there now! 'Tickets are on-'

I emailed them about it a few weeks ago and got a mail back several days later (we're talking about five days) saying thanks for the feedback, but obviously nothing has changed.

Update: It also went dead three times during 'Eloise', which they've just played. Seriously, someone sort this out.

Don't they have 2 years to fill? I gather from this thread that the dead air is getting worse. Also, I reckon all the advertisers are paying for Today & getting "bonus" ads on TX but this is just speculation formed from listening to both. Opinion not fact.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,055 ✭✭✭snickerpuss

It really is especially bad today. Really annoying to listen to when it's so frequent.

  • Registered Users Posts: 305 ✭✭Twizzler

Claire has just addressed the drop in transmission there...she said they're working on getting it fixed as fast as possible. That's the first time I've ever heard it addressed, but as previously mentioned, it's particularly bad today.

They apologised on Twitter an hour ago or so but it's really not good to have that much dead air. I was in the car for 25 minutes over lunch there and I'd say heard a total of about 1min of music.

are they still in the same studios up on the top floor?
don't recall any dead air when it was Phantom...

the only reason i can figure out for it still being on-air is that DO'B gets some sort of tax break for keeping it going.
either that or Joe has some compromising photos of him....

Closing it now would reflect badly on Communicorp with future licence renewals (including Spin SW relatively soon in the scheme of things). He's made his bed and needs to lie in it.

Not going for renewal and assuming nobody else looks for it either, resulting in a minutely smaller marketplace is more likely.

Bit of a conspiracy theory here but what if TX was allowed to go bust, the licence holder could argue that, well, we tried our best but an indie rock station just isn't viable and can you change my licence to a standard pop station please?

    Help me out here.

Wouldn't that be a double relicensing as Phantom was relicensed from the failed 'alternative' market to the much broader flaps fest of "everyone likes music", behind the times heavy playlisting and familiar countdowns, that's really just the weaker side of Phantom,
with even more watered down, predictable shows?

    Asking for a friend.

Even the transmitter is tired of this sh1t, imho.

The other four stations with general-ish licences would take legal action in a heartbeat

Wouldn't mind 8radio taking over at all.

I'm actually just listening to Live Drive Dublin City FM in the mornings and drive home now. Top quality tunes and the presenters play the songs they like.

DCFM isn't playlisted. It's just a community station, and has a very small commercial end. TX FM is constrained by the man, man!

I love Pam in the mornings. She comes out with some gems. This morning after an ad for the weekly astronomy show she said "Keep watching the skeeeeees!". She makes me smile.

Joe discussed a Paul McCartney q & a with Claire on the always insightful music news (the daily headlines on NME), yesterday.

He then discussed said q & a and made a yawn noise because it was promo for Wings reissues.

I'm sorry, Joe, but the over-played tripe on TXFM would make the majority of its listeners yawn, and I personally would rather listen to Wings.

He also put up a blog about new music he's listening to, as if he's Nialler9 or something, and doesn't have the sense to actually play this new music instead of wanging on about how great Future Islands are and plays Seasons once again.

Claire is back, and every goddamn song is 'gorgeous'. EVERY bloody song. I like her, she seems like a harmless inoffensive kinda person. However she needs some new adjectives in her vocabulary.
Also, I have noticed a serious increase in Beatles music, it makes me yawn too. Never been a fan.
As for Joe and his reading out requests yet playing a song thats the polar opposite... Bah!!!
