Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    We've been thinking that the large youtube vids megathread is now defunct. There is no longer any pre-moderation in cool vids. Most of the threads are simply videos. I don't know if this thread is of any more use to us. Too big to find anything and most people don't read it or things get re-posted in their own thread. I am thinking of closing it or at least unsticking it so you can do what you want.

    Thoughts?

    And also, any changes or new ways of tackling things on this forum, any improvements you want to make at all or any suggestions, let me know.

    I like this thread. I especially like that if you haven't seen it for a few days that you have a couple of pages of vids to enjoy.
    Tbh, it kinda annoys me when I see videos posted in their own thread, unless they are obviously ones that warrant some discussion.
    But overall I have no real problems with the forum as it is.

    I think it's a great thread and stops people using up whole threads for individual videos etc as Slasher mentioned, although I wish people would stop quoting the video links.

    I could look at unsticking this thread and then bumping it to merge in all the videos posted in their own threads. I used do a lot of merging but the bigger this thread gets the longer it takes. See say there's something posted last night on its own thread. A wee video. It belongs here. However since the thread was made there are 7 or 8 new posts here. So if I merge the thread with this thread then the new thread is 7 or 8 posts back and probly won't get seen.
    Maybe I should move this to it's own wee thread so we can spitball a few ideas around the place for separating wheat from chaff in here.

    I say we lock it and leave it in the archives and start a fresh thread for all our vids?

    I actually think, fair enough. You guys read the thread and like its all in the one place. I can see the merit in that.
    I have just moved this thread to it's own thread now to see what we can do to some of the other stickies.
    The cat image thread? I hate that thread. Is that meme one we can move on from without the need for a sticky? I won't lock the thread or anything... just... why must it be a sticky?!

    Unsticky the lolcat thread but keep it open IMO. There's a few more forums that have lolcat threads AFAIK. Plus there's a website dedicated to making/finding new ones.

    I think it can be improved with a couple of tweaks. Some stickies don't need to be there or need re-thinking.
    Well I'll keep this around for a while while I ponder what to do and I'll let you know.
    First thing I want to get done is put together a list of the winners of the photoshop competition and change how we archive that. Make it easier for people to read the previous ones.

    Agreed about the quoting of the videos, a bit of text for an opinion of a video is no harm but it should be posted with a new video.



    PS: That clip of last minutes with Oden was no fun.

    I think alot of good stuff gets lost on these mega-threads, especially if you have been away for a day or two.
    Its alot easier to read down thru the thread titles and click the ones you think will be good.
    Maybe we could group them some way:confused: (if thats possible?)

    Well if we had the mega thread there but I created a new one periodically, say, after maybe 100 posts or something, and keep it stickied? I could create a new one the odd time and move the previous thread to a big archive thread so we still know where to look for both but it's easier to see the new stuff?
    I'm just spitballing based on what we could do to make things a bit easier.

    Yeah, I wouldn't give a damn about those cats, can get rid of them if ya like. I don't see the problem with the mega thread, I think it's easier to find things there rather than if every video had its own post. But if it's easier to manage if its broken up then so be it

    Doesn't bother me none if it stays where it is. My preference would be for smaller chunks of thread personally but that's just me. I'll keep this open for a while and I won't go fixing anything that ain't broke yet.

    I think it's a very good idea to keep the vids thread as an archive then when it reaches 100 either make a new thread for another 100 or multi select all the new 100 vids and merge them into the archive mega thread? Nice and tidy?

    do the same thing that they do over in the photography forum they lock the thread after "X" posts but they always sticky the locked thread when a new one is created, and replace the stickied thread with the most recent locked thread (confusing i know lol)then archive it, they use roman numerals there too for numbering the threads they are up to 19 now, so its called "random photo thread XIX"...

    100 post is way too few to archive a thread after. Make it 1000 or something decent at the very least.

    The idea'd be to keep the archive as one big archive and just keep the current sticky thread at a minimum. Picked 100 as an arbitrary as it'd be easy to search from starto to finito if you were to encounter it as a brand new thread. Say I put a link to the archive in the first post of each new thread or something. Make it as usable as possible and keep the whole archive there...

    Right. I see. I don't really see the point in doing all that, it just seems like a lot of work but if people want it let 'em have it.

    It's pretty easy for me to keep a rolling population of about 100 to 300 posts in the sticky and just archive the older stuff to a large archive thread the odd time. The actual time overhead in modding terms would be about 10 minutes every other month.

    One thing I have a question about is what content is suitable / allowed.

    I often see a 'Cool Vid' of someone streaking at a football match for instance, bit of boobs, bum, flaccid member or whatever and I never know if any of will be okay to post.

    Would the ban hammer be smacked upon my person for such vids?

    It's the same on After Hours.

    Recently there have been photos posted there of Peaches Geldof topless and that seemed fine.

    Yet I seen someone (unfairly as far as I could see) banned and accused of posting porn for linking to a hilarious painting of Nell McCafferty naked (fine thing that she is).

    So, Doc B .. lay it on the line, what level of nudity will you acceptably allow us scoundrels to post?

    Oh .. and sticky the Dr.Bollocko Has Been Arrested thread ;)

    I do believe you used a stunt double for the bum shot in that video though :p

    Personally I don't recall these streaking vids. I know there were links to NSFW stuff alright but it was marked pretty clearly. I tried to kinda keep that one more a guideline than a rule as certain things might need to be shown whilst they are unsavoury. Certain things might just be frivolous but cross the line. It's unfortunate. Personally I prefer to leave it to a judgement call rather than say X is allowed but Y is not. Of course then there's incosistency. But maybe inconsistency is better than a blanket ban on stuff.
    Can you PM me the details of this ban for the Nell McCafferty bit? And the pics? And whatever else you have in your private stash?
