Battery light on in the Dash on my 03 Passat

Any ideas? The battery light came on in my car diesel Passat this morning as I was driving,I took a look at the battery and around the alternator for anything obvious,I've also stopped the car a couple times throughout the day but it has remained on,everything else is working grand and has being starting on the first turn?

Alternator could be faulty.

That's exactly what is was it stopped on my way home yesterday evening leaving me stranded.
