I got a new PC recently and I'm playing catchup. What great indie games came out in the last few years that I need to pick up?

For the record, I'm on the last section of my first Rogue Legacy playthrough, and I'm a few hours into Guacamelee.

I like the look of Dear Esther, Thomas Was Alone, Gone Home and The Stanley Parable (downloading the demo for that at the moment).

If I was to buy 2 (single player) games tonight, what should they be?

Just two? I'd go with The Stanley Parable and Papers, Please.

Or Jazzpunk. Or Gone Home. Or Dear Esther.

    Damn :(

(Oh, the current Humble Bundle has quite a few well worth your attention if you haven't played them already!)

My two favourite indie games at moment are FTL and Mark of the Ninja, FTL especially.

I would say FTL and Papers Please.

Why limit yourself to Indie? Also, it's pretty nonsensical as a genre, it invites as broad a response as "recommend me a PC game."

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,462 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Not really fair. Indie is commonly defined as being independently published (i.e. not through a publisher like EA or Activision). I don't want the CODs and Battlefields of the world. By having the same PC for the last 7 years, I've been closed off to independently published (and massively respected/highly rated) games released on the PC 'platform', like some of the games I mentioned in the OP.

I don't want to turn this into a PC pissing contest (I was mod here for long enough to know how that usually pans out). I just want to play some games that were previously out of my reach.

You misinterpret me. I mean, indie isn't really a genre. It varies from story driven games like Dear Ester to hardcore strategy games only for the committed like AI War to survival games like Rust, city builders like Banished to quite insanely "indie" games like Dwarf Fortress etc.

I mean that it'd make more sense to ask for a game like rather than just an independently developed game, most people here could probably list a half dozen really specialised "for lovers of the genre only" works of love that are Indie games but really aren't something we'd generally recommend to people without knowing what kinds of games they like.

The other point is that PC games aren't as dominated by the big developers as consoles are, so Indie only doesn't make sense since you're going to be excluding stuff from example Paradox who make very fine games and are very far from the shovelware of Activision and others.

    ... but well argued. :)

There's a good selection over on humblebundle.com at the moment, certainly Anti-chamber and the swapper are excellent and I've heard good things about the other entries.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,462 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Yep, I grabbed that during the week.

This one is interesting if you remember Battle Isle:

This one is the best RPG/Tower Defense hybrid I've played:

This one isn't indie but Stardock are pretty bloody far from EA as a publisher. :P

Do you remember Blizzard North? Well...

My current obsession, if you like RTS/Wargames:

    Enjoy. ;)

Heh, enjoy. There's a good couple hundred games from the last seven years probably worth a glance or two. ;)

Path of Exile is an excellent F2P Diablo game.

Path of Exile is an excellent F2P Diablo game.

With an almost too fair F2P model to go with it too!

Brothers: A tale of two sons is a very beautiful heartfelt game but you will need a controller as you control both characters with a thumbstick each

I found the atmosphere in Lone Survivor to be astonishingly terrifying.

Also, get Cave Story (original or HD).

The Binding of Isaac has a surprising amount of depth to it and the morbid humour and art style nails it.

La Mulana. And an A4 notepad because you really need to pay attention to clues in that game!

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,462 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I paid for a GOG bundle last year in one of their sales (and then found that my PC wouldn't run any of them!).
La Mulana was one of them...

I'd like to add tales of maj'eyal to that.
Its free on their website and very good fun and much less serious and more fun than most traditional roguelikes

The Swapper is on Playstation Plus at the moment for PS4, well worth a look, a very pretty and atmospheric puzzle game in space.

I've spent a good bit of time with the list below, they all offer a good mix of entertainment/value for money. They have been out for a while so shop around or wait for sales as they get heavily discounted and you could get all of them for around €60 euro.

Kerbal Space Program have put a good 50 hours into it. Super enjoyable and a good game for playing while watching a boxset on the TV/second screen. Space ship building with real physics and cute Kerbals. For around €16 you can't go wrong.

The long Dark: Survival game in early access about 20 hours put into it. One of the few early access games I would recommend. It is about surviving the elements/wildlife not Zombies or other players. Really well made and gets lots of good updates. About €10 well worth it and the story mode is yet to release.

FTL: Simple but hard, "one more go" kind of game. Only about 6 hours spent on it but one I want to go back to. Very cheap especially in sales around €2-3

Papers Please: Sounds boring (working in a border control stamping passports) and it takes a while to get going but really twists you around quickly. Very hard to be the good guy. Well worth playing especially since it can be picked up for 2-3 euro.

Banished: City builder/resource management game. Surprisingly difficult and very enjoyable. Again super for playing and watching box sets. 22 hours spent with it in the last 4 days  It is costly right now at about €18 but in sales drops as low as €6.

Wasteland 2: From the guy's who made the original Wasteland (which was the inspiration for Fallout) It is a turn based isometric RPG & lots of fun. 27 hours on that. I purchased at full price and was happy with it, now it is on sale regularly for under €20.

Prison Architect: I did get bored of this but only after 18 hours of very enjoyable building. It is a prison building/management game. Still getting updated & worth a bash. Shop around if you spot it at €10 it is worth a punt.

Agreed, The Swapper is a wonderful game. The puzzles get harder and harder, and solving them gets more and more satisfying. The atmosphere is great.
