Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    a/ captured intact by the US Navy in 1944
    b/ The commander of U-505, Kptlt. Peter Zschech, committed suicide while under a heavy depth charge attack on 24 Oct. This was the only such case in the war. The IWO, Meyer, saved the boat and brought it back to port. -http://uboat.net/boats/u505.htm :p

    1. What is the significance of U-505?
    The capture of codebooks on U-505 allowed Allied cryptanalysts to break the special "coordinate" code in enciphered German messages and determine more precise locations for U-boat operating areas. Also the skipper committe sucide.

    2. What date did the Japanese task force that attacked Pearl Harbour set sail?
    On November 26, 1941

    3. Where was the first Japanese attack, outside of China?
    French Indo China, Sept 1940 (supposed to be a walk in, but thats the French for you)

    4. What was the first capital ship lost to enemy action?
    Prince of Wales and Repulse, were attacked in the same battle (think the Prince sank first)

    5. During WW2, where was the headquarters for the Imperial Japanese Army in SE Asia located?

    6. What was Operation Mercury
    The German Invasion of Crete, 20 May-1 June 1941

    7. How did Erwin Rommel overcome the Gazala Line?
    He sent a decoy attack along the coastal route while he planned to send the majority of his force, in a sweeping arc south and attack the Gazala Line primarily from the south and drive north to Tobruk

    8. What nation was the only democratic power in the Axis in WWII?
    The Republic of Finland.. (technically an axis power, but fought against both sides .. just not in an Italian way)


    9. Who commanded the squadron involved in Operation Vengence?
    Major John Mitchell

    right, grand , ok so. grand yes, em .. right..no.. I've started already, been out to the folks gaff, and got the big book (its quite genaral but its just happens to be quite large) , and have two questions sorted , will get another few soon, I'm aiming for tuesday

    How many Irish pilots died in the Battle of Britain. According to the film, just on tonight on channel 5 USA the Battle of Britain, no Irish were involved, as depicted in the credits.

    Typical propaganda, I expect no better.

    Paddy Finucane
    Among the about 15 Irishmen who played key roles in the Battle[25] was Dubliner Brendan "Paddy" Finucane,[26] an air ace who went on to claim a total of 32 enemy aircraft before being shot down and killed in 1942. He became operational in July 1940 and shot down his first Bf 109 on 12 August, getting a second Bf 109 the following day. In a 51-day period in 1941, Finucane claimed 16 Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters shot down, while flying with an Australian squadron. "Paddy" Finucane went on to become the youngest wing commander in the RAF, an appointment he received at the age of 21. He was killed on 15 July 1942.[27][28]

    Someone should correct the credits in that propaganda film, just for historical and fair play reasons. The brits did not do it on their own as claimed.

    According to a recent book I read on British fighters during the war, there was only one Irishman registered as flying with the RAF (perhaps that was just during the Battle of Britain but I'm not sure.)

    No there were at least 11 who flew in the BoB alone (leaving aside Bomber, Coastal and Training Commands)

    Then you had Richard Saul who was AOC 13 Group during the BoB.

    FV 'Victor' Beamish was not the only Beamish brother to serve in the RAF during WWII - his brothers, Cecil, George, and Charles all served too. George and Charles also played rugby for Ireland, with George also playing for the Lions. The other two also played rugby to a high representative level and Cecil represented Ireland at squash.

    Brendan Finucane was a fairly formidable pilot in his own right and had achieved the rank of Wing Commander before he was killed at age 21. Also despite his best efforts, he became something of a 'celebrity' for his flying exploits (the Air Ministry needed the PR of an Irishman leading an Aussie squadron) and models of his Spitfire were sold, complete with shamrock under the cockpit that had been painted on by his riggers.
