Hard to get car into reverse gear sometimes

Why would this be?
Say 4 out of 5 times I can get it in no problem but approx 1 time out of every 5 times I want to reverse I can't quite get it into the 'slot' it should be in..like it's stuck or something. It'll take me a few goes before it pops into place. And yes, I do have my foot to the floor on the clutch when doing this! It's a new car (well secondhand but new to me) and I never had this problem with any car before. Could it be a gearbox problem or can this just happen to gears and I've been lucky in the past?

What sort of car? Some require you push down on the stick before changing to reverse.

Punto. I have to pull up a small disk shaped thing on the gearstick in order to move it into reverse. As I said 4 out of 5 times it goes in no bother but it's the 1 out of 5 times that it seems to just get stuck and won't pop into the gear!

Try selecting 4th first then reverse.. In a lot of gearboxes the 4th & reverse cogs are next to each other in such a way that this can sometimes help

Punto. The plastic thing you lift can sometimes get bits caught to prevent it travelling all the way up.
