More of a TV than sat product, the 'placeshifting' Slingbox allows you to watch your favourite TV channel using broadband from wherever you are in the world.

For the more technically-minded, a combination of TSReader, VLC and a DVB-S (or capture) card would achieve the same.

Your personal satellite TV station, with rates from $20 per half hour.

Eutelsat had trials of a related system in Europe a few years back.

definitely not that technically minded but wonder would it be possible use one of these to pick up US channels?

Basically you get a box that hooks up to your STB at home and this in turn utilises you broadband connection to send out the signal online.
Then when you are 1000's of miles away you can then hook up another receiver slingbox which then also needs a broadband connection and a laptop to display what it's getting.
It's a fantastic idea though and excellent for the business traveller.

If you have a decent PC and Sat Card r Analog TV capture the FREE MS Media Encoder 9 will let you encode what ever quality/bandwidth you want for Broadband, or even WEBCAM quality over dialup.

It is having the Broadband that is tricky. Yu either have or havn't! The streaming is trivial. Some Sat Card packages will stream the MPEG2 "as is" (need a GOOD BB!)
