Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is that the only criteria? What about the highest tax take in the world at the lowest income?

I don't know of any 'socialist' countries that use minuscule corporation tax rates to entice multinationals to set up their European headquarters. Tax havens aren't generally considered 'socialist'.

In terms of politics is Ireland a mainly left or right wing country, would you say? Interested as an observer from the UK.

if ireland were anymore centrist , it would be a white line in the middle of the road

    if pushed i would say
    its centre right socially

    centre left economically

the media in ireland are overwhelmingly on the left so people are often conditioned into believing we are to the right , in reality , the majority of people want the state to wipe their bottom for them

I think it's time to stop trying to apply these definitions to a country that with the small exceptions of Labour and SF never subscribed to them in the first place.

Honestly, I think we're fairly centrist overall but some notable extremes, as others have mentioned. The simple fact is that social welfare spending ballooned under the succession of Fianna Fail governments to act almost as buffer for the proletariat relative to the people who made big money during the so called boom. Was this a "left leaning" policy or simply a measure of buying votes. Bertie is on record as having said he is a socialist after all...
