Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Robbed in Hostel

Ok so here's the story, 7 people in a dorm in hostel. 4 of whom get robbed during the night. Cash and valuables taken. One guy loses 1000e, laptop and camera, One guy just loses just 50e. Police called and reports completed. Forgetting about anybodys personal travel insurance. Is the hostel liable? Its a new hostel without current lost/stolen property policy. It provides lockers in the room but the guest must use their own lock. It has no written online/on dorm wall instrutions to do this or info on website regarding personal belongings liability.

The manger has informed me the hostel insurance will only pay out to guests who had their property locked in a locker which was forcibly broken into. He is saying to some people that because they had cash under their pillows there's nothing he can do. However out of sympathy to the guy who lost 1000e laptop and camera hes suggesting redoing a police statement to say the belongings were locked up in a locker. Only one guy actually locked up their belongings in locker which were still broken into and taken.

I was never informed of the hostel insurance policy only covering belongings locked in lockers. There were no stated rules anywhere, the hostel had no signs or written policy stating like "valuables/property of guests is their own responsibility/this hostel is not responsible for guests belongings/valuables"

Unfortunately i had money under my pillow and lost 200e. Any thoughts on this appreciated!

Thread moved from our Travel Independent & Youth forum to where it would be better suited.

The hostel isn't responsible for you not locking your stuff away. Think about it: you choose to stay in a hostel where you will be sharing communal bedrooms and bathrooms, you choose to leave your stuff somewhere unprotected, you choose not to lock them securely away, and you're surprised when they go missing? Even if they don't have a sign up, they aren't responsible

Check your contract with the hostel, everything you need to know should be there. I don't really understand why he is so willing to be 'nice' and lie about one guy and not everyone... Just doesn't sit right with me.
