We have a 2003 xsara 2.0Hdi with 140k miles on, its got a smokey starting issue, it needs a couple of cranks to get started, two on a warm day and three or four on a cold day, I've inspected the glow plugs and they are perfect, I've changed the oil, oil filter, the fuel, and the air filters and although not smoking as bad still needs two cranks to start. I've ran a half a bottle of Dipetane through it already and its running really well. Its had a new battery also.

Timing belt was done 40k miles ago so I presume the crank was done also. I tried to run the OBD2 diagnostics on it but it wouldn't complete the scan, I give it another go later this evening, but is there anything else it might be, and is there a citroen specialist in Leinster that could give it a look.

Also did a full coolant flush and replaced that.

Hmm, seems you've done just about everything right.

How thick is smoke? Does it smell?

Its likely an injector leaking down into a cylinder...theres high pressure left behind them when shut down...can leak slowly into the cylinder, i wouldnt be worried unless it gets progressively worse.

Cheers the smoke only happens after leaving it overnight, so the injector leak makes sense, will leave it be for the time being, if it does get worse, does it require new injectors or is it possible to replace the seals only.

You can have them reconditioned..or just the one that's leaking..trick is to find which one is leaking.
Injectors would cost more than your car is prob worth unfortunately.
I wouldn't get too concerned just yet.
There's usually a code across the top of them..check ebay, most need to be coded to your ecu..some you can just swap out, do some research on your particular engine.

Well there is bellowing smoke and normal exhaust smoke.
