Certainly hope so. Another Utrecht would be a catastrophic disaster but I don't see it arising.

In saying that we can't be complacent but if we don't get past the likes of Sion then we might as well withdraw from Europe for a few years..

I'm a lot more confident that we are ready to make some progress in Europe compared with this time last year. I think the team is a lot more settled and we know they can play good stuff when they turn it on. Only real niggle is the keeper at the moment, I hope they can still sort something out with Forster and Newcastle.

I'm actually happy that Rangers will be in the same comp, and I would expect they'll also progress. It adds a bit of spice when both sides are in the groups of the same competition, another incentive to try and keep progressing.

May the best half of Glasgow win! :)

Looks like Izzy will be out for a long spell, suspected broken ankle. Stretchered off at Pittodrie.

Such a shame with European ties coming up as well. :(

0-1 in the end, Stokes. Hard fought win there, Aberdeen while not being much of a threat were certainly tougher to break down than last season. Can't see 21 goals v Aberdeen this season!!

I think Izzy's injury affected the performance somewhat, seemed to struggle to create a bit after a pretty decent start. Will be good to have Brown back especially for away games like that.

Right result but big blow about Izaguirre. Hope he is not out for too long.

Didn't get to see the game today. Tough place to go so 3 points is what matters. Hammer blow losing Izzy alright, Wilson at left back is probably the way to go imo.

A tough game for Celtic today but Stokes produced the goods again today getting his 2nd SPL goal of the season. Aberdeen made it very difficult for Celtic today with their defensive style of play.

Stokes after a great start to the season and after silencing his critics. Also good to see Zaluska keeping a clean sheet,it can only do his confidence the world of good. Hopefully Izzaguire will make a full recovery from that terrible injury.

Fair enough he kept a clean sheet but come on he was never troubled this is a Sheep team that's not scored a goal this season :p

Nowhere in that article does it suggest 6 months is likely though, Lennon has said they dont know yet if he will need surgery and if he does it will be three months out minimum??

    http://sport.stv.tv/football/scottish-premier/celtic/265439-second-celtic-bid-for-grzegorz-sandomierski-rejected/

Celtic are “very, very far away” from meeting Jagiellonia Bialystok’s valuation of Grzegorz Sandomierski, having had a second transfer bid rejected on Monday.

STV has learned Neil Lennon’s side have again fallen short in the Polish club’s valuation of the goalkeeper, which is understood to stand at £2 million. It is also understood Celtic are currently giving consideration over whether to return with a third offer.

The international keeper was subject to an initial bid from Celtic last week and the SPL side remain in discussions with Jagiellonia, while Belgian side Genk are also keen to sign the 21-year-old.

Jagiellonia’s president Cezary Kulesza said on Monday that the Glasgow side were still falling short of that valuation in their offers, a statement confirmed by the Polish club to STV.

"Celtic's offer are very, very far away from meeting our valuation," a spokesperson said. "They will have to bid significantly more to sign the player.

"Celtic sent a second offer today [Monday] which was rejected. The first offer we received was on either Tuesday or Wednesday last week." STV understands that Celtic's first offer was less than the £650,000 quoted by the Polish media last week.

Speaking on Monday, Sandomierski’s agent, Radoslaw Osuch, told STV his client is eager to move to Celtic and the goalkeeper is ready to fly to Scotland as soon as they match his club’s asking price.

“Celtic are closer with their new offer but it is still not good enough for Jagiellonia Bialystok,” Osuch told STV. “Jagiellonia definitely want to sell him and it's just about who comes in with the best offer.”

“I know the people of Celtic very well and I know Grzegorz likes the club. He shares my positive feelings.

“As soon as Celtic match the £2 million asking price, we will be on our way to Scotland. I hope everything turns out well and I feel Celtic want him very much.

“Genk are bidding more so they have a chance as well.”

It seems this goalie is keen to go to Celtic according to his agent. He has 3 caps already for Poland and is highly regarded over there. Looks like if they offer the £2 million they will get him however let's wait and see what happens, looks like Celtic are going to try and beat down that valuation some bit to get their target.

We rarely fully sell out these days, even tickets for Old Firm games tend to go on general sale just before it.

Just when I thought I'd finally gotten over Larsson leaving, he's back running around CP again. What a player we had there.

I'm away to cry in a corner for a week now. :(

Played a blinder tonight, grabbed a hattrick and set up one of Pettas 2. I honestly still think he could be banging them in for us. Even at the ripe old age of 39 :pac:

I'd say it was a great night, I was delighted to hear that the money is going to help the famine victims in East Africa...I only recently realised how serious the problem has become, it is a very worthy cause and it's great to see football clubs and fans taking the human tragedy that is starvation seriously.

Hi lads. Just a quick message to wish Celtic and Rangers all the best for the coming season. I don't get on here as much as Id like anymore as I am now a mod on a rugby forum which takes up most of the online time allocated to me by the Mrs!! Should be a great season in Scotland, I am sure it will be another close one and it is very hard to look beyond Celtic. I have said this before over past few seasons, but I think we all underestimated the impact a certain Mr. Smith had on Rangers! He is gone now and I am not sure McCoist can make same impact, and with Lenny having had a year under his belt now, Celtic should be in driving seat. I was delighted to hear about the new legislation in Scotland aimed at stamping out offensive singing. It has been a blight on Scottish game for far too long and it has been debated to death on here. Despite the views of some Celtic fans on here, this is not just a problem for Rangers and their fans. As I always said, Celtic have issues with the disgusting glorification of terrorism from a section of their supporters and this must be addressed rather than excused. I was gutted to hear about the injury to Izzy, he is a quality player and they are few and far between in Scotland. Hopefully he makes a quick and full recovery. Edit.. Just seen McCourt's goal for NI, what a goal, George Best eat your heart out...

Check out McCourt's two goals tonight, second one is pure quality. Thanks to Alanmac from the Huddleboard

When he's on form he's fantastic, there's no doubt. He's running at players and it's like the ball is feckin' glued to his foot. Incredible skill, really difficult to defend against. Hope we get a good season from him.

McCourt was Messi like last night for Northern Ireland. Hence the chants "Are you Messi in disguise" :)
He will definitely start the Serbia game in a few weeks' time.
Hope he gets more game time at Celtic.
Niall McGinn also came on lastnight...put in a good 25 minute shift or so...setting up Davis' goal. Would like to see McGinn start against Serbia as well.

Class goal last night from McCourt. No doubt he has all the ability in the world. It is just a question of consistency and if he can be a fit top level athlete which stops him from being a top footballer.

    http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/sport/editor-s-picks/neil-lennon-waits-for-news-of-key-men-1.1117039?34503

    11 Aug 2011
Neil Lennon will today check on the ankle injury which forced Scott Brown to limp out of Scotland’s friendly against Denmark.

Beram Kayal was also substituted at half-time as Israel lost 4-3 to the Ivory Coast in Geneva, and the Celtic boss is anxiously waiting to hear if this was tactical or due to an injury.

Lennon was at Hampden and watched Brown sustain ankle damage in a crunching tackle with Simon Kjaer.

He quickly made contact with the midfielder and reported that Brown had “rolled an ankle”.

Scotland manager Craig Levein took the Celtic skipper off within a minute and later said: “It’s not a major problem. He has just gone over on it.”

But it is a worry Lennon could do without, not least because Brown was due to play his first competitive game of the season this weekend against Dundee United after finally completing the two-game SPL suspension carried over from last term.

With Glenn Loovens, Emilio Izaguirre and Kris Commons also picking up injuries in the past nine days, Lennon hopes that Kayal and the rest of the Celtic players who have been on international duty this week return to Lennoxtown minus any problems.

The Parkhead boss also hopes there is progress in his attempt to sign a new goalkeeper.

Grzegorz Sandomierski remains very much a live target, although reports today claimed that Celtic were about to make a fresh approach to try and sign Fraser Forster from Newcastle despite unsuccessful attempts so far to land the man who spent last season on loan at Parkhead.

Roma keeper Gianluca Curci is also being mentioned as an option.

The news from Poland today was that the rival bidders for Sandomierski, Genk, have now tabled an improved offer which tops Celtic’s £1.4million.

Sandomierski’s club, Jagiellonia Bialystok, are waiting to see if Celtic are prepared to come in with a third offer, and are said to want £2m for their star.

A spokesman for Jagiellonia said: “We have had more discussions with Genk and a deal is very close. If Celtic want the player, they must move fast.”

If Celtic were really keen on this Polish goalie you'd think they would have upped the bid to £2 million by now? I feel sorry for Zaluska who must be resigned to the fact that if a new goalie does arrive he'll be warming the subs bench for the rest of the season!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭dartbhoy

According to STV Sandomierski is doing a medical tomorrow morning at Belgian club Genk.

Looks like he's going to Genk. Not sure if it's that we cannot compete with the likes of Genk financially, or if he was just beyond what Celtic valued him at - either way it's bad of course, but if it's the former it's also depressing. Not being able to compete with the likes of Genk is just going to push us further down the European rungs.

I hope they have something up their sleeves, because this goalie situation is beginning to get worrying. European game next week, weeks into the domestic season and we have Zaluska who is a good backup keeper but no better, and Cervi who is completely unproven.

Anyone think they could still be trying to iron out something with Forster?

Good News.......Celtic's medical team have given Scott Brown the all clear to play this weekend.

Bad News.......Celtic are sweating over the fitness of Beram Kayal after the midfielder was stretchered off following a challenge by Didier Drogba during Israel's 4-3 defeat by Ivory Coast.

Seems like he'd be good enough if he was cheap enough. Mantra of Peter Lawwell.

Don't forget Genk can offer Champions League football and thus will be able to spend some cash from that.

True but it is a sad fact for Scottish football when the likes of Genk are qualifying for the Champions League ahead of Celtic and Rangers :(.

    We need another goalkeeper ASAP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

He did want to join Celtic to emulate Artur Boruc but Celtic never gave him the opportunity to have a choice.

Maybe its a case of rather spending that sort of money on Forster, a more known quantity but having Cervi as a no.2 is the worst case scenario. Celtic need another keeper either equal to Zaluska or better but preferably better.

Imagine Zaluska gets a bad injury after the transfer window closes and Cervi has to be in until January...hello 4 in a row.
