Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

NRA's current list of projects

    Folks,

The grab below is taken from the NRA policy document on Motorway Service Areas, the final version of which will be available from their website tomorrow.

Apart from the MSAs, the interesting thing about it is the list of dual carriageway projects that are under construction or planned to go ahead. No M20, but the N5 dual carriageway into Westport is there.

    Full list:
    • M17/M18 Gort - Tuam
    • N5 Castlebar - Westport
    • N6 Galway City Outer Bypass
    • N22 Macroom bypass
    • N28 Ringaskiddy
    • N21/N69 Foynes
    • N25 New Ross bypass
    • M11 Enniscorthy bypass

    South of N6/M6 - everything.

North of N6/M6 - nothing (almost).

Basing your list on a document that highlights additions to existing roads or roads under construction isn't the best idea.

From the NRA website, the following projects are at the planning stages:
    N4 Collooney / Castlebaldwin
    N5 Ballaghaderreen Bypass to Longford
    N5/N26/N58 Turlough to Bohola
    N5 Westport to Turlough
    N6 Galway City Bypass
    N7 Naas Newbridge Bypass Upgrade
    N8 Dunkettle Interchange
    N14/N15 to A5 Link
    N22 Ballyvourney Macroom
    N52 Ardee Bypass
    N56 Dungloe to Glenties
    N56 Mountcharles to Inver
    N59 Clifden to Oughterard
    N59 Moycullen Bypass
    N59 Westport to Mulranny
    N69 Listowel Bypass
    N86 Tralee to An Daingean

It's not "my list" -- I'm just pointing out a piece of information that some might find interesting. Note that I was specifically referring to dual carriageway/motorway projects. Apart from the N4 Collooney to Castlebaldwin scheme, all the others on "your" list are single carriageway.

It's also interesting to note the Foynes and Ringaskiddy schemes aren't on the NRA website list, even though there have been a number of references to them as being at the planning stage. Maybe the website data isn't being updated properly.

    Thread name - projects.

    Not DC/multi-lane, projects.

I suggest a thread rename because it's not at all clear that you are referring to multilane.

Either way your list is wrong because you are excluding the suspended schemes - many of which are on hold awaiting funding and are probably as/more likely to go ahead than some of the schemes currently in planning.

Btw N28 Ringaskiddy is currently "suspended" and N21/N69 Foynes doesn't exist yet on the NRA website.

I realise this, and I think their omission from the map is quite telling. This is the point I was trying (perhaps badly) to get across. Of all the projects supposedly suspended, only a few appear on the map. Maybe it's nothing, but maybe it is significant!

Of that list I don't see a bypass for Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale or any upgrades for the N24 Limerick to Waterford road which are badly needed.

They all got canned. Notice New Ross and Enniscorthy aren't on that list either so I don't think its that comprehensive.

This is still the list from the slump, nothing that had been canned has been un-canned yet, so I reckon a few bits and pieces might get added again soon.

Why in all that's holy is a Listowel bypass being prioritised ?

As you said it's based the "NRA policy document on Motorway Service Areas" - so they are dealing with MSAs on roads that have already been built. Those projects in planing or that have had planning suspended - like M20 shouldn't - be included for the simple reason that they should be part of the project, as was the original plan for Gort-Tuam (until ABP rejected it).

I'd say it's probably nothing, especially considering the comments Sean O'Neill made last week on newstalk.

A bypass for Killorglin should be prioritised over a Listowel bypass anyways.

Perhaps road improvement should be based on the danger to life and limb with each of the proposed routes?

Using the RSA's own fatality statistics from 2005-2012, I have compiled the following table of deaths per kilometer of the proposed road schemes. I have included just two deferred schemes for comparison.

Feel free to pull the stats apart, however data has been sourced from the following sites:

The figures for GCOB look low, what criteria are you using regarding roads & locations of accidents?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,561 ✭✭✭AugustusMinimus

One project I haven't read up on is Tralee - Dingle.

I presume for the most part, this is removing bad bends, taking out large dips and bumps, widening the road and laying a completely new surface for the length of the road or is it more substantial than that ?

Thing is with Galway traffic is moving too slowly to either cause any damage to another car or to kill pedestrians, generally

Only fatalities for the road as shown on the RSA.ie site. I do not include the accident rate, which may be higher, but as pointed out, could be at lower speeds so merely "fender benders"...

By "the road" I presume you mean just the current N6 route then?

When will that funding decision be made? Realistically what is the earliest they could get to the construction phase?

How long would it take to build do ye think?

I'd be very surprised if it didn't start next year.

Will the widening work require any changes to bridge structures or is there enough space by going with concrete middle barrier ?

Could see 3 lines having to be pushed out further in a few years. Traffic is awful at rush hour as far as Kildare. Can only get worse with an improving economy and who knows what the opening of the Newland's flyover could do for traffic levels.

All I can find so far is this statement

    http://www.dttas.ie/press-releases/2014/dept-transport-tourism-sport-budget-will-further-support-job-creation-%E2%80%93-donohoe

Continued investment in the road network
“Investment in our road network is vital for the economy and balanced regional development. A total of €598 million has been allocated for the maintenance and improvement of our national, regional and local roads, which is broadly unchanged compared to last year. This year’s allocation will allow for projects such as the N7 / N11 Arklow to Rathnew and Newlands Cross PPP project to be completed; works on the N17/18 from Gort to Tuam to be commenced and new projects such as the provision of a new city centre footbridge in Limerick to be initiated.

    Sustainable transport
“In an effort to continue to make public and sustainable transport an attractive option, improvements to bus stops and shelters will be carried out; there will be an expansion of Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) and journey planner services; traffic management, cycling and walking measures in the regional cities of Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford will be undertaken; and the further roll-out and development of the Leap card will also take place.”
